Greenville Drive News Release
Charleston, SC - The Greenville Drive got off to a fast start on Thursday night, and they held off a late comeback attempt by the Charleston RiverDogs to notch a 6-3 win in the series opener.
The star of the Drive (19-20, 60-48) victory was Daniel Gonzalez (7-2), who shined in a spot start on the mound. Gonzalez shut out the RiverDogs (25-14, 59-50) over seven innings while allowing four hits and one walk with six strikeouts.
The Drive took advantage of a Charleston error in the top of the third to take a 1-0 lead against Nick Nelson (2-8), and the lead was extended to 2-0 in the fifth when Tyler Hill lined an RBI single to plate Tucker Tubbs, who began the frame with his 24th double of the year.
A four-run sixth for Greenville was highlighted by a three-run homer from Ryan Scott, his ninth of the season. Steven Reveles added an RBI single in the inning as well.
The RiverDogs scored three times in the ninth to cut halfway into the Drive lead. Isiah Gilliam and Dermis Garcia delivered RBI hits in the frame, and Steven Sensley brought home a run with a groundout as well.
Tubbs and Brett Netzer each collected two hits for Greenville on Thursday. Gilliam led Charleston with three hits, while Carlos Vidal added a pair of hits.
The Battle of the Palmetto State presented by Spinx continues on Friday night with a 7:05 first pitch in Charleston. Right-hander Hildemaro Requena (5-3, 2.73) takes the mound for the Drive, and he will be opposed by RiverDogs right-hander Rony Garcia (0-1, 2.22).
