Mississippi RiverKings News Release
Southaven, Miss. - The Mississippi RiverKings (5-10-2) snapped a seven-game losing streak as they defeated the Louisiana IceGators (10-8-2) 4-2 in front of a crowd of 2,358 at the Desoto Civic Center.
On the opening faceoff, Sean Murray dropped the gloves with an unexpecting Mike Tuomi, landing the IceGator forward a roughing penalty and setting the tone for the duration of the game as both teams played a tight-checking, physical game.
The RiverKings got on the board early as Ken Selby netted his sixth goal of the season on a shot from the slot over the left shoulder of B.J. O'Brien to give the 'Kings a 1-0 lead just under 2:30 into the first period. Just three and half minutes later, Nolan Waker notched his first goal as a RiverKing, as he put home a Darrell Stoddard pass to put the home team up 2-0.
But Louisiana would answer back. Penalties hurt the team in the first period, as Brayden Metz put home a shot at the 9:25 mark of the first period to cut the lead in half. Then, as Jason Hill broke in alone on Scott Darling, he was pulled down by Cameron Sault and referee Jason Schulz awarded Hill a penalty shot. Hill went low blocker side to beat Darling and tie the game up at two.
Scoring would not resume again until about midway through the third period. Deven Stillar's shot through traffic found it's way to the back of the net, as O'Brien never saw it, to give the 'Kings the 3-2 lead. Then, with five seconds left to play, Ken Selby put home the empty netter on a pass from Stoddard to conclude the scoring and notch his team leading seventh goal of the season.
The win improves Scott Darling to 4-6-1 as he turned aside 31 of 33 shots against. B.J. O'Brien falls to 5-3-1 and 0-2-0 with his new team.
