Knoxville Ice Bears News Release

KNOXVILLE, TN (December 22, 2011) - The Knoxville Ice Bears took down the No. 1 ranked team in the SPHL, the Augusta RiverHawks, with a 5-3 victory in Knoxville tonight. A crowd of 2,814 cheered on the Ice Bears as they extended their undefeated home record to ten games.

Knoxville notched an early goal to start the game. Just 48 seconds into the first period, Emery Olauson scored his 18th goal of the season on assists from Eric Slais and Tyler Fletcher.

Augusta beat Ice Bears' goalie Bryan Hince at 5:02 to tie the game at 1. Matt Auffery broke the tie just over a minute later as Augusta secured their only lead of the game. Through a series of penalties, both teams had the opportunity of a 5-on-3 power play, but neither team was able to alter the score.

The Ice Bears scored an early goal in the second period to knot the game at 2. Only 1:32 minutes in the second frame, Dan Bremner buried the puck past Augusta goalie Jon Olthuis with Hince and Tyler Fletcher assisting the goal.

Ice Bears Captain Kevin Swider ripped an unassisted slap shot from the left at the 8:50 minute mark to put Knoxville ahead 3-2. Bremner notched his second tally of the night just a minute later off a pass from Fletcher over Olthuis' left pad.

After Bremner's goal, the RiverHawks replaced Olthuis in net for Peter Skoggard to finish out the game for Augusta. But Skoggard couldn't stop the Ice Bears from hitting their fourth unanswered goal of the second period. Brett Valliquette added to the Ice Bears lead on a crisp pass from Eric Satim to make it 5-2.

Tension started to mount as the second period was winding down. Segal tangled with Augusta's Branden Kosolofsky in a display that showcased the brewing rivalry. Augusta scored their final goal of the game with 1:38 left in the period.

The Ice Bears maintained their 5-3 lead through the entire third period. Even when Augusta pulled their goalie to skate a sixth man on the ice in a power play, they couldn't get past the Ice Bears.

The tensions exploded between the teams at the end of the game. Several post-buzzer altercations resulted in 10 penalties handed out at the 20 minute mark. The Augusta RiverHawks return to Knoxville on Thursday, Dec. 29. Ice Bears fans won't want to miss as these two teams face each other again.

The next home game is Monday, Dec. 26. Come celebrate "Kid's Night" with a special SpongeBob SquarePants theme as the Knoxville Ice Bears host the Mississippi RiverKings. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. It's the perfect activity for visiting friends and family this holiday season.
