SPHL Announces Suspension, Fines

December 23, 2011 - SPHL (SPHL) News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC - The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) today announced it has suspended Knoxville forward Brett Valliquette four games and fined him an undisclosed amount for an incident in the Ice Bears' game against Augusta on Thursday, December 22.

At the 20:00 mark of the third period, Valliquette was assessed a match penalty for spearing an Augusta player. "In reviewing the video and speaking with the game officials and a league supervisor that was in attendance, Mr. Valliquette appeared to challenge an Augusta player during the altercation," stated SPHL Vice President Doug Price. "When the Augusta player moved toward him, Mr. Valliquette drew his stick back and then forcefully speared his opponent. The League Office has made it clear that it will not tolerate any player who uses his stick in a deliberate attempt to injure an opponent."

Valliquette will miss Knoxville's games against Fayetteville on December 23, Mississippi (RiverKings) on December 26, Huntsville on December 28 and Augusta on December 29.

The SPHL has also fined Knoxville head coach Mike Craigen an undisclosed amount for his actions at the end of the game, whereby he was assessed a game misconduct for confronting Augusta head coach Brad Ralph as he was exiting his bench.

In addition, both coaches were fined an undisclosed amount for their selection of players put on the ice for a faceoff just prior to the end of game, which ultimately led to the altercation between the teams.
