Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - Brandon Cumpton scattered seven hits to allow just one run over seven innings, and a three-run bottom of the third was all the offense the Curve needed in a 3-2 series-opening win over the Erie SeaWolves before 3,823 Friday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field. The Curve's modest winning streak hit four with the victory.
Cumpton (5-3) blinked just once in his eighth start of the season, allowing a run in the first on a Jordan Lennerton RBI single scoring Jamie Johnson after Johnson had reached second on a leadoff walk and an errant pickoff throw attempt by Cumpton. Aside from that, Erie was punchless against the Curve righty. Cumpton out-walked his strikeout total with three free passes to two Ks, but he forced the SeaWolves to strand runners in the third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh en route to his fifth win of the season.
Trailing by a run, the Curve went to work in the bottom of the third quickly against SeaWolves starter James Avery. The first four Altoona hitters of the inning reached with Anthony Norman, Robbie Grossman, and Brock Holt all scoring in the frame. Norman came home to tie the game on Holt's RBI single, and Grossman and Holt touched the plate on a two-run double by Jarek Cunningham, freshly reinstated from the disabled list after 20 games out due to a left wrist injury. Avery (5-3) actually outlasted Cumpton, pitching through two outs in the eighth before departing on the way to the loss.
Erie notched a run in the eighth to pull within one against Curve reliever Mike Colla, but Colla stranded two men on base in his lone inning of work. Duke Welker (S, 4) followed with a spotless 1-2-3 ninth for the save. The SeaWolves went 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on as a team in the loss.
The Curve seek a five-game win streak on a Curve, Pa. Blue Out Saturday with the middle game of three against Erie. Altoona will send right-hander Shairon Martis (1-0, 2.25) to the hill to square off against Erie lefty Kelvin De La Cruz (2-4, 3.93). Saturday night is the first installment of the Curve's 2012 Mascot Campaign Button Giveaways with the first 1,000 fans through the gates receiving a Tenacious "Vote Ten in '12" button. The middle contest of this series is also a Kids Play Free Day presented by Butler Restoration Services with all kids amusement games operating free of charge for children in attendance. Saturday's first pitch is set for 6:00 p.m., and airtime on ESPN 1430 in Altoona and all along the Curve Radio Network is slated for 5:30.
