SeaWolves Drop Opener in Altoona

The SeaWolves could not come through with a big hit on Friday night at People's Natural Gas Field as, despite a quality start from James Avery, fell to the Altoona Curve 3-2.

Erie struck for a run in the top of the first inning against Altoona starter Brandon Cumpton. Jamie Johnson led off with a walk and moved to second on an error. He came in to score on a two-out Jordan Lennerton single for 1-0 lead.

All three of Altoona's runs came in the bottom of the third inning against Avery. Anthony Norman singled with one out and Robbie Grossman walked putting two on for Brock Holt. Holt singled home Norman, tying the game at 1-1. Jarek Cunningham followed with a two-run double, giving the Curve a 3-1 lead.

In the eighth, the SeaWolves closed the deficit to a run. With one out, Lennerton reached on an error and he came home to score on a two-out Plagman single making it 3-2 against reliever Mike Colla.

Erie would get no closer as Duke Welker tossed a 1-2-3 ninth, preserving the Curve win.

Avery (5-3) took the loss despite a solid effort. He tossed 7.2 innings, allowing a three runs on six hits with a walk and six strikeouts in a losing effort.

The SeaWolves struggled to hit with runners in scoring position in the game going just 2-for-12.

Erie will look to rebound from the series opening loss on Saturday night at People's Natural Gas Field.6:00 First Pitch. Lefty Kelvin De La Cruz (2-4, 3.93 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Sahiron Martis (1-0, 2.25 ERA).
