Lancaster Stormers News Release
After banging out 53 hits in four nights, the Barnstormers finally were slowed down by a pitch that, well, slowed down.
Knuckleballer Joe Gannon mystified Barnstormers hitters for most of the night, striking out a career-high 10 in downing Lancaster, 8-3, ending the visitors' four-game winning streak.
The Barnstormers reached Gannon (3-0) for two runs in the first inning. Juan Francia reached base when his swinging third strike eluded catcher Brandon Ketron for a passed ball. Francia stole second and scored on a single up the middle by Mike Woods. Woods moved up on a wild pitch, and Danny Gonzalez walked. Greg Blosser grounded into a double play, but Lance Burkhart extended the inning with an RBI single to right, delivering Woods for a 2-0 lead.
Ivanon Coffie doubled with one out in the second for Lancaster's final hit of the evening. The ballclub managed only three walks after that, one of those leading to a run as Woods stole second, moved up on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning.
Southern Maryland's stubborn offense wore down starter Shane Youman (0-1). He allowed an unearned run in the first inning but cracked in the second, an inning in which he was forced to throw 34 pitches. Clint Johnston led off with a single through the left side, and James Shanks gave the Blue Crabs a 3-2 lead with a booming two-run homer to left center. Ketron kept the inning going with a one-out single to right, and George Sandel followed with a single to center. John Ramistella and Curtis Pride both walked to force home an additional run before Youman coaxed a 1-2-3 double play out of Pat Osborn.
Youman walked Jeremy Owens and Clint Johnston to start the third and was lifted for Ricardo Gomez, who allowed only one run to score, giving up a one-out single to Chris Maples.
Gomez kept the Barnstormers in the game, retiring 10 in a row at one point. He yielded back-to-back singles to Ramistella and Pride in the sixth, and Osborn put the game away with a three-run homer onto the picnic tents over the left field wall.
