Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, NJ - The 2007 Atlantic League Champion Newark Bears announced today the signing of infielder/outfielder Ramon Nivar. Nivar comes to the Bears from the New Jersey Jackals of the Can-Am League where he was batting .221 with 21 RBI in 23 games this season.
Nivar was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Texas Rangers in 1998. He eventually advanced to the major league level and appeared in 35 games for the Rangers in 2003 and 2004. After being traded to the Baltimore Orioles organization, he played in seven games for the Orioles in 2005. Although he appeared as an outfielder in all of his major league games, Nivar started his career in the infield and will likely play both infield and outfield for the Bears.
Nivar is no stranger to the Atlantic League, having played with the Camden Riversharks and York Revolution last season. With the Revolution, he held a .306 batting average with 14 doubles and finished the season fourth in the league with 22 stolen bases.
