Tri-City Storm News Release
KEARNEY â The Tri-City Storm of the United States Hockey League completed the 2005 USHL entry draft on Thursday evening, selecting 13 players throughout the 20 rounds of the draft. The Storm now has a 30-player protected list that includes Thursday's draftees and 17 players from last year's squad that could return for the 2005-06 season.
Tri-City began the draft by selecting goaltenders Matt Lundin (pronounced Lun-deen) and Richard Bachman with their first and second round picks. Lundin comes from Maine University where he spent his freshman season with the Black Bears. Bachman spent the 2004-05 season at Cushing Academy in Massachusetts.
"Lundin comes from one of the high profile schools in the country. It's an opportunity for him to come back and play a few more games before going back to Maine a year from now," said Bliss Littler, the Storm's head coach and general manager. "Bachman is a player that had a lot of success last year and was a standout at the midget national tournament. These two along with Nick Hopper should lead to a great competition in goal this year."
Seven of the Storm's final 11 picks on Thursday were used on forwards. Canadian forward Kyle Ostrow was the Storm's third selection in the draft followed by Team Wisconsin's Sean Wiles who the Storm selected in the sixth round.
"Kyle is a very highly sought after player in Canada and is dealing with big-time college programs. We have some work to do to get him committed to come here, but the upside we feel could be very top end," said Littler.
The Storm also made two trades on draft day. The Storm sent forward Cody Chupp to Waterloo in exchange for a second round choice in the 2006 draft. In a second trade, defenseman Jeff Carlson was sent to Cedar Rapids for a fourth round pick in 2006.
The Storm will now take the 14 returning players, three futures players, 13 draft picks and numerous other invited players to tryout camp being held June 3-5 in Bloomington, Minn.
"We feel very good about the returning players. We like our draft but the success of that will not be known until the middle of next season," Littler said. "Now we head to camp three weeks from now and that's the next piece of the puzzle. We want an extremely competitive camp so that guys have to work hard for all jobs."
