Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Head Coach/GM, Kevin Hartzell has been busy selecting players in the 2005 USHL Entry Draft today. As of 3:45 PM Thursday, the Stampede had drafted a total of eight players with seven more roster spots available. The USHL Entry Draft is a vital part in each team's success in the league. Last year, four of the Stampede's first five picks made the Stampede roster and went on to post successful first year seasons.
The Stampede selected goaltender, Alex Kangas (Kane-gess) with their first round pick (#3 overall). Kangas played last season at Rochester Century High School in Rochester, MN. Kangas posted a 23-4-3 record last season with a 1.86 GAA and a .937 saves percentage. Kangas set a Minnesota State Tournament record for most saves in a period with 50 last March.
"It's a dream come true," said Kangas on being the Stampede's number one pick. "There are thousands of kids in the nation who would love to be in my spot right now. I am going to work very hard so that I can accomplish my next goal of playing Division One college hockey."
In the second round (14th overall), the "Herd" selected Matt Overman from Bloomington Jefferson High School (MN). A 5'10, 170-pound forward posted 57 points (23g, 24a) in 26 games last year for the Jaguars. He has already committed to Colorado College for the 2006-07 season.
With the 21st pick in the draft, the Stampede selected Josh Brodeen of Warroad, MN. The 5'11, 175-pound forward tallied 57 points (29g, 28a) in 31 games last season with the Warroad Warriors. Brodeen, who also starred on the football field, played on the same line with T.J. Oshie last year as Warroad became Class "A" state champions.
With the 25th overall pick in the third round, the "Herd" grabbed forward, Patrick Tiesling (Teas-ling) from Rhlander, WI. Tiesling spent last season with the Marquette Electricians Midget "AAA" hockey team in Marquette, MI. Tiesling (6'3, 185-pounds) recorded 70 points (21g, 49a) in 67 career games with the Electricians.
In the fourth round, the Stampede went big, selecting a 6'4, 200-pound defenseman, Jared Hummel. Hummel notched 48 points (12g, 36a) in 30 games last season while captaining the Academy of Holy Angels High School to their second state championship in four years. Hummel has already accepted a scholarship to attend St. Cloud State University for the 2006-07 season.
