Stormers Stung in Second Half Opener
July 6, 2018 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers' problems from the latter end of the first half followed them into the start of the second Friday night as they fell 5-1 to the New Britain Bees at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Bees' starter Kyle Simon (5-4) shut down Lancaster through seven innings, allowing no runs on six hits, all singles, while striking out four. Steve Johnson (3-5) took the loss after going five innings, giving up four runs on five hits, striking out five.
New Britain's Jason Rogers got the Bees on the board early with two-out, two-run homer in the first, following a single by former Philadelphia Phillie Brock Stassi.
The Bees continued the assault into the second. With two outs, Johnson hit Vince Conde with a pitch and walked James Skelton. Darren Ford singled to left, scoring Conde for a 3-0 lead, and Stassi stretched the lead one more with a single into right field.
New Britain's final run, an unearned tally, came in the sixth. It started with a Matt Tuisaosopo walk, coming off Lancaster reliever Stephen Johnson. Two batters later, Jonathan Galvez beat a one-hopper back to Johnson. The right-hander fired well to the right of Rico Noel covering at the second base bag, allowing Tuisaosopo to race to third with Galvez holding at first. The lead runner eventually came home on a sacrifice fly by Vince Conde, for a 5-0 Bees lead.
For Lancaster, nothing began to materialize until the fourth inning as Simon retired the first 11 Lancaster hitters. Blake Gailen got the team's first hit, a single flared into left center. Ryan Casteel followed up with a single of his own, but both were stranded on an inning ending force out.
Lancaster's best chance at a comeback came in the bottom of the ninth. New Britain relief arm Elvin Ramirez pitched a 1-2-3 eighth, but could not match the success in the ninth. He yielded a leadoff infield single by Casteel and a walk to Trayvon Robinson to open the inning. The right-hander retired K.C. Hobson on a flyout to left. Grant Desme launched a double to deep left center to score Casteel and give Lancaster their lone run of the contest. With runners on second and third, the Bees turned to Sam Gervacio for the save situation. The former major leaguer (one of 11 on New Britain) got the final outs, including a strikeout on Tyler Bortnick to end the game.
Lancaster turns to veteran right-hander Brooks Hall (5-2, 5.03 ERA) for Saturday's rematch. The Bees will send southpaw Josh Outman (2-1, 3.00 ERA) to the mound for his first start in 2018. Saturday's contest features a postgame fireworks display, themed to superhero music! Tickets are available at the Two Dudes Box Office, or by purchasing online here!
