Lancaster Stormers News Release
Lancaster erupted for 17 hits on Sunday afternoon, taking an 11-5 victory over the Bridgeport Bluefish in the series finale at Harbor Yard.
The bottom of the order paced the Lancaster attack. Ryan Mulhern, batting seventh, was 2-for 4 with a homer and three RBI while the eight and nine hitters Gerard Haran and Cesar Suarez collected three hits apiece. The Barnstormers turned five double plays to back a spot start by Ricardo Gomez (4-1) and the bullpen.
Neither club picked up a base hit in either of the first two innings, but the Barnstormers reached Kyle Jackson (9-8) for a pair in the third. Mulhern rapped a double to left to start the inning. Haran followed with a walk, and Suarez moved the runners ahead with a sacrifice to first. Jackson retired Michael Woods on a pop up to third, but Anderson Machado scorched a grounder inside the first base bag for a two-run triple and the initial lead.
Mulhern followed a one-out error by shortstop Wilson Batista with a two-run blast to left field in the fourth. Lancaster loaded the bases afterward, but Jackson escaped further damage striking out Matt Watson to end the inning.
Bridgeport had its best chance to get back into the game in the bottom of the fourth. Tyrone Pendergrass bunted for a base hit and moved up on a passed ball. Brandon Sing doubled into the right field corner, driving in the first Bluefish run of the day. Jesse Hoorelbeke followed with a single flared to right, bringing Sing home, pulling the Bluefish within a pair. Ryan Radmanovich ripped a liner to Mulhern at first which was turned into a double play, getting Gomez out of trouble.
Lancaster ripped the game open in the fifth. L.J. Biernbaum lined a single into right center, and Aaron Herr followed with a line drive single to left. Jed Morris loaded the bags with a ground single into right field. Bridgeport manager Willie Upshaw stuck with Jackson for one more hitter, and he walked Mulhern on four pitches to force home a run.
Haran greeted reliever Andy Weimer with an RBI single through the right side of the infield. Suarez produced another run with a bouncer over the head of third baseman Luis Lopez. Woods and Machado each drove in a run with a force play ground ball as Lancaster pulled ahead, 9-2.
Hoorelbeke added a second RBI single in the sixth, and Pendergrass slugged his second homer of the season with a man aboard in the eighth as Bridgeport got closer. Suarez and Woods each singled home a run in the ninth.
The Barnstormers are off on Monday and travel to Newark to start a three-game series against the Bears on Tuesday evening. Jason Scobie (5-7) will make the start for Lancaster.
Following the series in Newark, the Barnstormers will be home for 12 of 16 games. There will be fireworks shows after the games on Friday and Saturday. Tickets are available for all games through www.lancasterbarnstormers.com or by calling 717-509-HITS.
