Iowa Barnstormers News Release

DES MOINES- ... In a hard fought game between Midwest Division rivals, the Iowa Barnstormers beat the Peoria Pirates, 42-33, before 8, 107 fans at Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Field. Both teams now stand 4-8 on the 2008 af2 season.

The visiting Pirates struck quickly as QB Justin Rascati found a wide open Phillip Brock for a 24-yard touchdown pass as Peoria jumped to an early lead. The 'Stormers quickly answered as Joe Brannen found Errick McCown on a crossing pattern for a score as the first quarter ended in a 7-7 tie.

Peoria quickly answered to start the second period as Rascati again hooked up with Brock on a 14-yard touchdown pass. A flurry of points then ensured as Robert Kilow caught a three-yeard TD pass, Terrance Freeney scored on a short run, and Jack Walker, Jr. picked off a Rascati pass and returned it for a 'Stormers touchdown. A Peoria touchdown and then a Jeff Glas field goal for the 'Stormers brought the first half to a close with the 29-20 'Stormers lead.

A quiet third quarter found the 'Stormers clinging to a 32-27 lead, but the game's final stanza was anything but quiet. Peoria found their first lead since the first quarter on a bizarre play that saw 'Stormers DB Tanner Varner intercept Rascati in the back of the end zone, only to fumble on a return attempt that was subsequently recovered in the Barnstormers end zone for a Pirates score and a 33-32 Peoria lead. The 'Stormers quickly answered at the 7:01 mark as Brannen again hooked up with Kilow, this time on an eleven yard touchdown strike.

The 'Stormers secured a huge turnover with 1:19 remaining as heavy pressure from 'Stormers LB Jason Berryman forced a hurried Rascati pass off the hands of 'Stormers DB Daniel McLemore and into the diving hands of Jack Walker, Jr. The 'Stormers then converted the turnover into a 26 yard Jeff Glas field goal and a 42-33 lead with 38 seconds remaining. On the ensuing Peoria possession, Jason Berryman and Kevin McLee combined on a fourth-down sack of Rascati to close out the game.

Next week the Barnstormers travel to Little Rock, Arkansas to face Head Coach John Gregory's former team, the Arkansas Twisters.
