Guelph Storm News Release
The Storm ended the regular season on a positive note this past weekend defeating the Owen Sound Attack 5-4 in Owen Sound on Saturday evening. Luke Pither scored four of the five Storm goals while Rafael Rotter posted five points in the win. Wednesday night the Kitchener Rangers were in town for the last match-up this season beating the Storm 4-1 in front of a home crowd of 4,668. Drew Doughty scored the lone Storm goal and Cody St. Jacques made 17 saves in relief of Thomas McCollum. Friday night the Storm hosted the Windsor Spitfires for the second time this season. Jumping out to a 2-1 lead in the first, the Spitfires never looked back scoring insurance goals in the next two periods to take the game 4-1. The Storm picked up two of a possible six points this week with their win over the Attack. Finishing with 78 points the Storm tied with Sarnia for sixth, but lost the tiebreaker based on wins as Sarnia finished with 34. The Storm will take on the Plymouth Whalers for the Western Conference Quarterfinal series starting Saturday March 24th at 7:00. The next home game for the Storm will be on Sunday night at 6:30 pm for the second game of the seven game series.
Guelph Storm Grand & Toy Player of the Week (Week ending March 18th)
Luke Pither - The Burketon native finished the week with five goals in three games and was awarded with the second star in Saturday's game against the Owen Sound Attack. Pither finished the regular season with 16 goals and 13 assists for 29 points. The 17 year old is currently tied for third on the team in power play goals with six. The second year forward was held off the scoreboard in Wednesday's 4-1 loss against the Kitchener Rangers, but scored the only Guelph goal in the teams 4-1 loss to the Windsor Spitfires. Saturday proved to be Pither's best game of the week as the 17 year old scored four goals including the game winner and two power play goals in the Storm's 5-4 win over the Owen Sound Attack. Western Conference Quarterfinal Series: Guelph Storm vs. Plymouth Whalers
Saturday March 24th: Guelph Storm at Plymouth Whalers, 7:00 pm
Sunday March 25th: Guelph Storm at Plymouth Whalers, 6:30 pm
On Saturday night the Storm travel to Plymouth to take on the Whalers for the first game of the Western Conference Quarterfinal series. In the four games these two teams have played this year two of them went into a shootout with the Storm winning one and the Whalers winning the other. Plymouth won the regular season series between these two teams winning three of the four contests. These two clubs have a rich playoff history, facing each other six times to date in post season play.
In the first six chapters of Storm - Whalers playoff duels, the two clubs have split the series with each winning three times. Most recently, Guelph dropped a favoured Plymouth squad in six hard fought games to earn a ticket to the Conference Championship series last year.
The upcoming Whalers - Storm series will be the latest chapter in a cross-border battle that dates back to 1993 when the Storm made their playoff debut only to be quickly erased by the Detroit Jr. Red Wings in 5 games. The Jr. Red Wings won their second straight head-to-head with Guelph in 1995 knocking off the Storm in 6.
Guelph finally earned a series win in 1998 on their way to the club's first OHL Championship. The Storm easily swept the Whalers outscoring them 17-5 in the OHL Semi-Finals. The series was marred by a vicious stick swinging incident early in Game #4 when Jesse Boulerice delivered a baseball swing to the face of the Storm's Andrew Long.
The Whalers answered back two years later in the 2000 Playoffs handing the Storm a six-game series loss. Most recently, Guelph has won two consecutive series over the Whalers with a four game sweep in 2003 on their way to their second OHL Championship and a six game win in 2006.
Guelph and Plymouth, two of the OHL's most successful franchises currently own the 2nd longest and longest active OHL playoff streaks at 14 and 15 seasons respectively. Heading towards their 7th playoff meeting with the Whalers in the Storm's 15 year history in the Royal City, Guelph has not faced any other OHL club on more than 3 occasions in the post-season.
