Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - The Lake Elsinore Storm set the tone early with two first-inning home runs on Wednesday night and never looked back. The Stockton Ports went 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position and stranded 12 as they dropped the third game of their four-game set to the Storm by a final of 7-1.
Luis Urias set the tone right away for Lake Elsinore as he homered to left to open the game off Ports starter Zack Erwin (3-9). Three batters later with two outs, Franmil Reyes homered to left-center to make it a 2-0 Storm advantage.
Lake Elsinore added to its lead in the third inning. With two on and two out, the Storm got three straight RBI singles. Reyes, Edwin Moreno and Ty France each singled to drive in a run to increase the Storm lead to 5-0. They were the final runs allowed by Erwin who would suffer the loss after 4.2 innings and allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out two.
Storm starter Brett Kennedy encountered a bases-loaded situation in the fourth but managed to escape. Richie Martin walked to open the frame and B.J. Boyd reached on an error. After Joe Bennie flew out to right and Sandber Pimentel popped out to the pitcher, Seth Brown walked to load the bases. Mikey White, though, would fly out to right field to end the threat.
Kennedy received a no-decision for Lake Elsinore as he went four scoreless innings and allowed just one hit while walking three and striking out four.
Trey Wingenter (1-0) took over for Kennedy to begin the fifth and pitched around a leadoff single by inducing a double-play. Wingenter hit Boyd and gave up a single to Bennie to open the sixth, but retired the next three batters in succession, including a pair of strikeouts, to end his outing. Wingenter picked up the win, going two scoreless innings and allowing three hits while striking out two.
Stockton would load the bases in the seventh facing Trevor Seidenberger. Melvin Mercedes singled, James Harris walked and, with two outs, Boyd walked to load the bases. Seidenberger was then lifted for Colby Blueberg, who got Bennie to fly out to right to end the threat.
Stockton's lone run came off Blueberg in the eighth when Brown homered to right to make it a 5-1 score. For Brown, it was his second home run in as many nights. It was the only run allowed by Blueberg in his inning-and-a-third of relief.
Corey Miller took over for Erwin to get the final out of the fifth inning and Miller went on to retire 10 of the 11 batters he faced in three-and-a-third innings of relief for Stockton. Miller allowed just one hit and struck out five.
Koby Gauna took over for the Ports in the ninth and gave up a leadoff double to A.J. Kennedy, who scored two batters later on an RBI single by Daniel Bravo. After Gauna issued back-to-back walks to load the bases, Michael Gettys grounded out to bring in the seventh Lake Elsinore run of the night to make it a 7-1 contest. Gauna allowed two runs on two hits while walking two in his lone inning of work.
Phil Maton came on to pitch the ninth for the Storm and gave up a two-out triple to Boyd, but got Bennie to ground out to the mound to end the ballgame.
The Ports and Storm play the finale of their four-game set on Thursday at Banner Island Ballpark. Heath Fillmyer (4-6, 3.71 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Lake Elsinore right-hander Chris Huffman (7-3, 2.65 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
