San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE, CA - The San Jose Giants earned their third straight victory with a 2-0 shutout of the Modesto Nuts on Wednesday evening at Municipal Stadium. Mark Reyes, Pat Young, Tyler Cyr and Reyes Moronta combined on a five-hitter as San Jose (46-37) claimed their third consecutive win over the Nuts to begin the series.
Reyes (7-3) picked-up the win after tossing six scoreless innings to start the contest. The left-hander worked around four hits and four walks while striking out five. Young (2/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 SO), Cyr (1 1/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO) and Moronta (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) then combined for three shutout innings of relief to seal the victory. Cyr pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh during a pivotal moment in the game while Moronta notched his fourth save of the season.
Jonah Arenado (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) and Robbie Garvey (2-for-3) collected two hits apiece to lead the Giants offensively.
The only two runs of the night came in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Garvey and Dylan Davis produced back-to-back singles putting runners on the corners. Arenado then blasted a double to deep center plating Garvey with the first run. Jose Vizcaino, Jr. followed with a sacrifice fly to left bringing home Davis to make it 2-0.
Modesto had several opportunities to score putting the leadoff man on base in six out of the nine innings. The Nuts had the first two hitters of the frame reach base in four of those innings, but failed to score in the contest.
Reyes pitched around three singles in the top of the third as Shane Hoelscher flied out to right to end the inning leaving the bases loaded. After San Jose took the lead in the bottom of the inning, Modesto threatened in the fourth. With one out, Max White walked before stealing second, but Troy Stein struck out and Josh Fuentes grounded out to retire the side.
After Reyes breezed through a 1-2-3 fifth inning, the Nuts had a golden opportunity to score in the sixth. Consecutive walks to Wes Rogers and Hoelscher started the inning to put the potential tying runs on base. Drew Weeks was up next, but he popped up a bunt that was easily caught by Reyes for the first out. The Giants starter then balked the runners to second and third. Reyes, however, managed to escape as he struck out White before setting down Stein on a comebacker.
Young relieved Reyes to begin the top of the seventh and immediately ran into trouble. Young plunked Fuentes on the first pitch of the inning before Wilson Soriano drew a walk. Omar Carrizales then hit a high chopper to third that was snagged by a leaping Vizcaino, who forced out Fuentes for the first out of the inning. Forrest Wall then popped out before a walk to Rogers loaded the bases. Cyr was then summoned to face Hoelscher and he promptly retired the Modesto clean-up hitter on a routine grounder to shortstop to end the inning.
In the top of the eighth, Weeks led off with a single, but was later picked-off by the catcher Ty Ross for the first out. Cyr then registered consecutive swinging strikeouts of White and Stein.
Moronta pitched the ninth and worked a quick 1-2-3 inning inducing a fly out, a pop out before striking out Carrizales to complete the shutout.
Nuts starter Helmis Rodriguez (1-5) suffered the loss after yielding two runs (both earned) on eight hits over six innings. He walked one and struck out four.
