Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Lake Elsinore, CA-- The Lake Elsinore Storm won their ninth straight game on Thursday night, coming from behind to defeat the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes by a score of 9-8 at The Diamond in Lake Elsinore.
Edwin Moreno ripped a two-run homer off Luis De Paula in the last of the eighth inning, sending Rancho to their second straight loss.
With the Quakes up 8-7, De Paula came out of the bullpen to face the bottom third of the Storm order. After walking the lead-off hitter, A.J. Kennedy, De Paula fired a wild pitch, moving the tying run to second. After a groundout by Javier Guerra moved Kennedy to third base, De Paula served up a two-run shot to right field, off the bat of Edwin Moreno, for what turned out to be the game-winner.
Leading 9-8 in the ninth, Storm closer Colby Blueberg retired all three Rancho hitters to record his 12th save of the year and give Lake Elsinore their season-best ninth win in a row.
Thursday's game went back-and-forth, as Quakes' starter Grant Holmes gave up five runs in the third inning, allowing the Storm to take a 5-0 lead.
Rancho roared back in the fifth though, scoring six times and chasing Storm starter Zech Lemond in the process. Johan Mieses doubled home a pair of runs, tying the game at 5-5, then scored on an RBI double by Garrett Kennedy, giving the Quakes a 6-5 advantage.
That lead didn't last long though, as Holmes allowed the Storm to retake the lead in the home-half of the inning. Kennedy's two-run two-out double off of Holmes put Lake Elsinore back in front at 7-6.
The Quakes again rallied, taking the lead in the seventh. Erick Mejia's second hit of the game knocked in Joey Curletta, evening the score at 7-7. Brandon Trinkwon, who finished the game with four hits and two RBIs, followed with an RBI single, bringing home Michael Ahmed to make it 8-7.
Yaisel Sierra followed Holmes out of the pen and worked two scoreless innings, before giving way to De Paula (2-2) in the eighth.
Ben Paullus (3-1) got the win for the Storm, working a 1-2-3 eighth.
Rancho (14-13, 56-41) now trails both Lake Elsinore and Lancaster by four full games in the second half standings. The Quakes will send Andrew Sopko (9-2) to the mound on Friday night, as he'll be opposed by Brett Kennedy (4-6), with first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm.
