San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE, CA - Jose Vizcaino Jr. drove in five runs while Dylan Davis and Ehire Adrianza both homered in a 13-6 Giants victory over the Inland Empire 66ers on Thursday evening at Municipal Stadium. In the opener of a four-game series, San Jose pounded out 14 hits and matched their season-high in runs scored. The win was the Giants' 50th of the season (50-47).
Vizcaino Jr. (3-for-3, 2 3B, 5 RBI) had three hits, including two triples, as part of a perfect night at the plate to lead the San Jose offensive attack. Ronnie Jebavy (3-for-4, 2B, 3B, SB) added three hits and was a home run shy of the cycle. Davis (1-for-4, HR, 3 RBI) and Adrianza (1-for-5, HR, 3 RBI) also drove in three runs apiece.
Inland Empire jumped out early scoring once in the top of the first inning against San Jose starter Phil Bickford when Zach Houchins delivered a two-out RBI single. The Giants though answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning and didn't relinquish the lead for the remainder of the contest. Jebavy began the frame by drawing a walk before stealing second. A deep fly out to center from Adrianza advanced Jebavy to third and then a Davis groundout scored the tying run. Back-to-back singles from Jonah Arenado and Miguel Gomez then put runners on the corners before Vizcaino clubbed a two-RBI triple off the left field fence giving San Jose a 3-1 lead.
Bickford pitched around a pair of walks in the top of the second before the Sixers plated one run in the third. A single and a hit by pitch put runners on first and second with two outs and then Jeff Boehm produced an RBI single to bring Inland Empire to within 3-2. Bickford though recovered to strikeout the next batter, Ryan Sebra, to end the inning.
Once again, the Giants answered a single 66ers tally with a three-run frame. In the bottom of the third, Davis led off with a solo home run down the left field line. The homer was Davis' seventh with San Jose this season. Following an Arenado fly out, Gomez drew a walk before Vizcaino smashed a triple into right center field gap. The hit scored Gomez and when the throw from the cutoff man David Fletcher to third base skipped away for an error, Vizcaino also scored to make it 6-2.
Dusten Knight relieved Bickford to start the top of the fourth and immediately ran into trouble as Inland Empire scored twice to cut the Giants lead in half. Three straight singles from Fletcher, Michael Hermosillo and Hutton Moyer with one out produced the first run of the inning. A sacrifice fly from Taylor Ward then scored another run to trim the San Jose lead to 6-4.
The 66ers scored another run against Knight in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Sebra doubled down the right field line. Josh Delph then hit a slow grounder back to Knight, but the Giants reliever threw the ball away down the right field line. The error allowed Sebra to score bringing Inland Empire to within 6-5.
San Jose though kept the pressure on scoring the next seven runs to take control of the game. In the bottom of the fifth, Arenado was hit by a pitch with one out before Gomez doubled down the left field line to put runners at second and third. Vizcaino Jr. was up next and he lined a single into shallow left scoring both Arenado and Gomez to make it 8-5. Later in the inning, however, Vizcaino left the game when he awkwardly slid back into second base returning to the bag after a Ty Ross fly out to right.
After Knight worked a scoreless top of the sixth, the Giants plated three more runs in the bottom of the inning. Jebavy began the inning with a triple off the fence in left. Adrianza followed with a towering home run to right for a 10-5 cushion. Davis then walked, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on an Arenado groundout and scored when Gomez hit a sacrifice fly to right.
San Jose scored their final two runs of the game in the bottom of the seventh. A leadoff single from Cristian Paulino was followed by a double down the left field line off the bat of Jebavy. Consecutive RBI groundouts from Adrianza and Davis then pushed the lead to 13-5.
Austin Fleet (2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 SO) kept the Sixers off the scoreboard in the seventh and eighth innings before Pat Young (1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO) pitched the top of the ninth yielding a two-out RBI double to Jared Foster.
Knight (1-1) was credited with his first win of the season. The right-hander pitched three innings of long relief and surrendered three runs (two earned) on five hits. Knight struck out three and did not issue a walk.
Gomez (2-for-3, 2B, RBI) also had a multi-hit game for the Giants.
Inland Empire starter Jake Jewell (1-9) suffered the loss after allowing eight runs (all earned) on nine hits over 4 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out three.
Notes: * San Jose also scored 13 runs in a 13-7 victory at Stockton on May 3. * Nine of the Giants' 14 hits went for extra-bases (four doubles, three triples, two home runs). * Vizcaino Jr. hadn't tripled in 292 at-bats this season before Thursday. He became the first San Jose player to hit two triples in a game this year. His five RBI's matched a single-game high for the club (Chris Shaw 5 RBI's on June 9 at Modesto). * The Giants out-hit the 66ers 14-13. * Adrianza has five home runs in nine rehab games with San Jose (.333 AVG, 11 RBI). * Davis has hit four home runs in his last seven games. * Bickford allowed two runs (both earned) on five hits over three innings in his start. He walked a career-high four, struck out four and threw 69 pitches. * The Giants have won back-to-back games after losing a season-high eight straight. * Thursday was the opener of a seven-game homestand.
