Storm Double Up Mavs, 16-8
August 15, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release
The Lake Elsinore Storm continued their recent torrid hitting, piling up 18 runs and 19 hits as they walked over the Mavericks 18-6 Sunday afternoon at Mavericks Stadium.
Early on, the Mavericks pitching staff couldn't find the strike zone. Maikel Cleto walked the first three batters of the game, and with one out, Jaff Decker lifted a ball into the strong winds to left field that carried out for a grand slam.
Like the two previous games of the series, an early lead didn't mean much. The Mavs responded with four of their own, including a three-run homer by Rich Poythress to tie the game.
Starting the third, the Storm would plate 14 of the game's next 15 runs. They put up a six-spot in the third, including a three-run homer by Jesus Lopez and another two-run shot by Jaff Decker.
Each team traded runs in the fourth, highlighted by Poythress' second homer of the day.
The Storm had another huge rally in the fifth, scoring five more times. Four different Lake Elsinore hitters drove in a run during the frame.
Cody Decker collected an RBI double as part of that big inning and then went yard with a two-run homer in the sixth to finish the scoring for the Storm.
Lake Elsinore totaled eight extra-base hits. Six players had at least two hits, and four players had a mutli-RBI afternoon as well.
Jake Shaffer added an RBI single in the eighth for the Mavericks final run.
It was less than a banner day for the pitching staff, who ended up allowing 29 runs and 35 hits over the final two games of the series. One day after walking 10 hitters, they walked eight more, including six by Cleto.
The Mavs starting pitcher couldn't even make it out of the third, throwing well over 80 pitches in two-plus innings. Cleto (3-7) allowed six runs and took his third loss in as many starts.
Storm reliever Eric Gonzalez (6-3) earned the win, pitching 1.1 scoreless innings.
With the loss, the Mavs have dropped seven of their last nine and fall back into second place. After their final day off Monday, they'll begin a 21-game home stretch Tuesday night in Rancho Cucamonga at 7:05 p.m. Live coverage will start at 6:45 p.m. on the High Desert's TALK 960 and www.talk960.com.
