Mavs fall 11-6
August 15, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release
One night after a convincing win over Lake Elsinore, the Mavs couldn't use an early five-run lead in their favor and fell 11-6 against the Storm Saturday night at Mavericks Stadium.
After scoring in their last six at bats in Friday's game, the Mavs put up five their first time at the plate Saturday. Two pitches into the first, the Mavs took the lead on a homer by Kyle Seager.
Two hit batsmen and an error later, the Mavs led by two. Rich Poythress followed with an RBI groundout, and Kuo Hui Lo and Trevor Coleman each provided RBI singles to complete the rally.
However, the lead wouldn't even last an inning as the Storm scored five in the second. Down 5-2 with two on, Bo Davis hit a home run to center field to tie the game and erase the early advantage.
The Mavs would regain the lead in the bottom of the inning when Johermyn Chavez connected on his 30th home run of the season to make it 6-5.
The Mavs wouldn't score again as the Storm plated the final six runs of the game. After the second, the Mavs had three hits, all singles.
The Storm would answer and tie the game in third. After there were none on with two outs, Allan Dykstra singled, and Ryan Skube brought him home with a double.
Tied 6-6 in the fifth, Skube provided a go-ahead two-run single to give the Storm their first lead. Dykstra followed with an RBI triple in the sixth make it 9-6.
Adam Zornes homered to open up the seventh, and a throwing error by Edilio Colina plated the final run in the eighth.
When it was all over, the Storm had outscored the Mavs 11-1 after getting down early. They outhit the Mavs 16-7, and the Mavs tied a season high by issuing 10 walks.
Storm starting pitcher Jeremy McBryde overcame a rocky first to battle back and earn the win. McBryde (3-3) allowed six runs--four earned--over five innings. He struck out five and walked two.
Mavs starter Jimmy Gillheney left his home debut after surrendering six runs over four innings. The bullpen allowed the final five of the game, including two by Jake Wild (6-5) in the fifth.
Once again, the Mavs could not put themselves in a position for a sweep and now are in a three-way tie atop the division with the Storm and Rancho Cucamonga. The Mavs will host Lake Elsinore in the final game of the series on Splashdown Day Sunday at 1:05 p.m. For tickets, call 246-MAVS or order online at www.hdmavs.com.
