Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes dropped their third straight game, but remain tied for the top spot in the South Division Second Half Standings, even after a 7-5 loss to the Stockton Ports on Saturday night at The Epicenter.
Lake Elsinore's win over High Desert now has the Quakes, the Storm and the Mavs all with a share of first, with Lancaster now just one game back.
Rancho looked like it may end Stockton's season-high winning streak, putting runners in scoring position in the ninth inning. Stockton closer Paul Smyth allowed a one-out single to Richard Cates and a two-out single to Mike Trout. A wild pitch moved the tying runs into scoring position, but Smyth fanned Alberto Rosario to end the game, notching his 22nd save and giving the Ports an eight-game winning streak.
The Quakes took the early lead against Stockton starter Fabian Williamson, as Luis Jimenez tripled home Rosario in the first for a 1-0 lead. Gabe Jacobo followed with a sac fly to center field, driving home Jimenez to put the Quakes in front at 2-0.
Quakes' starter Garrett Richards endured his second straight rough outing at home. Richards allowed a pair of runs in the second, as the Ports tied the game at 2-2. Stockton took the lead for good in the fourth, scoring four times to take a 6-2 lead. Tyler Ladendorf, who had three run-scoring hits on the night, drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single. Kent Walton followed with a run-scoring infield hit, before David Thomas capped the four-run frame with a two-run double.
Trailing 6-2, the Quakes got a run back in the bottom of the fourth, as Jon Townsend scored on a passed ball, making it 6-3.
The Ports took advantage of a Quakes' error in the fifth, scoring an unearned run off of Quakes' reliever Baudilio Lopez. With Michael Spina aboard on an error, it was Ladendorf again delivering a two-out RBI single, making it 7-3.
Richard Cates, who had three hits on the night, knocked in his first two runs in a Quakes' uniform in the sixth, driving in Dillon Baird and Angel Castillo to make it 7-5.
That's as close as the Quakes would get though, as the Stockton bullpen worked four scoreless innings to keep the Ports in front.
Williamson (4-0) earned the win, allowing five runs, four earned, over five-plus innings of work.
Richards (1-1) got tagged for six runs on seven hits over four innings, suffering his first loss as a Quake.
The Quakes (25-23, 64-54) look to salvage the final game of the three-game series on Sunday afternoon, sending Manny Flores (5-7) to the mound against former big-leaguer Travis Blackley (0-0). The first 1,500 fans through the gates on Sunday will receive a Quakes' Team Photo. Kids will "Run the Bases" after the game, thanks to My Gym and Radio Disney. Tickets are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. Game time is 5:05pm and gates open at 4:05pm.
