Guelph Storm News Release


The Storm returned to the Sleeman Centre on Friday February 17th to battle the Sarnia Sting. Guelph opened the scoring on the Powerplay with a goal from Scott Kosmachuk. The Storm carried a 1-0 lead to the dressing room at intermission. Sarnia answered back in the second period with goals from Craigh Hottot and Ludvig Rensfeldt. Guelph did not tally any goals in the second period. Charles Sarault added another goal for the visiting team. Cody McNaughton scored his 18th goal of the season and brought the Storm within a goal in the third period, but Hottot would answer back for Sarnia, who won the game 4-2. Sarnia went 0/8 on the powerplay, and Guelph was 1/4.

Saturday night the team traveled to Plymouth to take on the Whalers who currently sit in 2nd place in the Western Conference. Cody McNaughton dominated the scoring in the first period, scoring his 19th and 20th goals of the season. Guelph continued to control the scoreboard in the second period, adding 4 goals. Matt Finn scored his 9th of the season, on the powerplay. Just over three minutes later, Ryan Horvat scored his 7th goal of the season. Zack Mitchell added another Storm goal to make the game 5-0 at 11:43. Andrey Pedan notched his 9th, and the Storm took a 6-0 lead to start the third period. Jason Dickinson scored his 7th of the year on the powerplay, followed by a goal from Tyler Bertuzzi. Plymouth finally got on the board at 10:17 with a powerplay goal from Matthew Mistele. Late in the game, Cody McNaughton tallied his third of the game for the hat trick. Guelph won 9-1. Guelph also swept the 3 star honors. McNaughton took top honors, followed by Horvat with Second Star and Pedan with third.

The Storm were hosts to the Kitchener Rangers for a Family Day Classic. Kitchener scored three even strength goals in the first period from Tobias Rieder, Michael Catenacci, and Ben Thomson. Catenacci opened the second period scoring with a powerplay goal, and Andrew Cresecenzi scored one late in the second period to allow the Rangers a 5-0 lead to start the final frame. Jason Dickinson got Guelph on the board at 6:21, unassisted. Eric Ming added one more for the visitors and took the game 6-1. The Storm were 0/6 with the man advantage, while the Rangers were 1.4.

Player of the Week

The Guelph Storm announced today that forward Cody McNaughton is the Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday, February 19th.

Cody picked up six points (four goals and two assists) in two games this past week. On Friday against Sarnia, the Petawawa native scored the second Storm goal of the night in the 4-2 loss to the Sting. Saturday in Plymouth, the 19 year old had his best game of the season recording his first OHL hat trick and adding two assists in the Storm's 9-1 victory over the Whalers. Scoring his 19th, 20th and 21st goals of the season, the 19 year old was named first star of the game.

McNaughton currently sits fifth in Storm scoring with 41 points (21 goals and 20 assists) and he is second in power play goals with eight.

Storm Forecast

The Owen Sound Attack visit the Sleeman Centre this Friday night for a 7:30pm puck drop. The Storm travel to Sarnia to take on the Sting at 7:00pm, and the Kitchener Rangers return to Guelph for a 2:00pm start on Sunday.

Carstar Collision of the Month

Each week during the 2011-12 season, the Guelph Storm will name a Collision of the Game. Congratulations to Tyler Bertuzzi who won the hit of the month for December.

At the end of each month, fans will get the opportunity to vote for the CARSTAR Collision of the Month and eventually the CARSTAR Collision of the Year.

Voting is now open for the CARSTAR Collision of the month for January. Watch the video and decide who you think should win the CARSTAR Collision of the Month.

Coach4Food Practices Underway!

The Guelph Storm is pleased to announce that the Coach4Food practices are underway! The third Coach4Food practice was held this past Thursday February 9th, when the Guelph Jr. Storm Minor Peewee A team took to the ice with Assistant Coach Chris Hajt and Storm players Ryan Horvat, Francis Menard, Kyle Pereira and Zack Mitchell.

All practices will be held at the Sleeman Centre between 4:30 and 5:20. These practices are open to the public, and fans are encouraged to come out and watch!

In its first year running in Guelph, there was an overwhelming response from the teams that took part as over 11,500 pounds of food was collected.

Champions for Education School Visits:

Throughout the season, Storm players like to visit local elementary schools to present the Champions for Education program. They present the Fun Fit program which focuses on healthy active living, and why it is important as an athlete and a student. Players also present the Read to Succeed program to primary students and reinforce the concept of literacy, school, community, respect, excellence and anti-bullying.
