Stingy Bullfrogs Pitching Rivals Woodchucks Home Run Pop
June 12, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Green Bay Rockers News Release
Green Bay, Wis.- After Thursday's game in Wausau was postponed to a double-header on June 15th , the Bullfrogs host the Woodchucks on Friday night. It is "Educator Appreciation Night" at Joannes Stadium for a 6:35PM first pitch.
Pitching Coach, Luke Prihoda, leads a Bullfrogs staff that is second in the Northwoods League in team ERA (2.63). Bullfrogs hurlers have only allowed 48 walks in 123 total innings, limiting batters to just a .220 batting average.
On Wednesday night Luke Crabb (VCU) took a no-hitter into the seventh inning. Crabb, Ben Messenger (UW-Oshkosh), and Jeremy Graf (Flagler) combined for a two-hitter in which the Bullfrogs won 5-2.
Ryan Donovan (Hofstra) will bring the hottest bat to the Bullfrogs order for the following three home games. Against Madison, he hit a three-run home run in game one. It was a towering shot that landed well past the two rows of seating over the right-center wall at the "Duck Pond." He responded in game two with an RBI double in the ninth inning.
An improving Bullfrogs lineup enters having scored five runs or more in three of their last four, all wins. Of those victories, all three have come against varying opposition (Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, and Madison).
Additionally, the Bullfrogs have homered in successive games dating back to last Saturday night in the 8-3 win over the Growlers. Each of the home runs has been hit by a different Bullfrog (De La Rosa, Ross, Donovan, Jacobson).
Just a game under .500 (6-7), the surging Bullfrogs counter a Wausau club with erratic pitching, but capable hitting.
Former Bullfrogs' Field Manager, Jordan Bischel, chiefs a Woodchucks team that has bopped a Northwoods League best 14 home runs. Wisconsin has also rapped 26 doubles and reached base at a .372 clip, also tops of the 18 teams in the league.
They will battle Bullfrogs starter, Alex Martinez (De Anza), whose first start was five innings, one run, on five hits, in an impressive no-decision at Madison on June 4th.
Martinez, a hard-thrower, will go against a Woodchucks lineup with some of the best power threats in the Northwoods League.
Of those 14 homers, Max Ponzurick (Virginia Tech) has four of them (2nd NWL) and has eight extra-base hits. Ponzurick also sports an impressive .833 slugging (1st NWL).
Another caution-tape player for the Bullfrogs will be Woodchucks shortstop, Ryan Howard (Missouri). He has hit for a .400/.478/.625 slash line in 46 plate appearances. In two games against Battle Creek, June 9-10, Howard was 4-for-9 with a pair of RBI and runs scored. He already has five multi-hit games of his 10 played.
After Friday's duel with the Woodchucks, Green Bay hosts the Madison Mallards, the fifth and sixth times the teams will have met already this season.
