June 2, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Allen, TX - The South Carolina Stingrays (13-9) fell to the Allen Americans (13-7) 5-2 in Game 2 of the Kelly Cup Finals at the Allen Event Center Tuesday night. Stingrays defenseman Scott Ford and forward Sean Dolan scored goals in the loss. The best-of-seven series is tied 1-1.
The Stingrays dominated the offensive chances in the first period and outshot the Americans 8-7, but Americans forward Dyson Stevenson capitalized on a bad bounce off the glass to lift in his second goal of the playoffs over the pad of Stingrays goaltender Jeff Jakaitis (L, 10 saves on 13 shots) at 6:05.
In the second period, the Americas slipped the puck past Jakaitis twice to take a 3-0 lead into the intermission. Forward Gary Steffes buried this team-leading 11th goal of the playoffs at 11:17 and stepped up again on the power play with 17 seconds remaining in the stanza to give the Americans a three-goal advantage. The Stingrays would pull Jakaitis in favor of Clay Witt (6 saves on 8 shots) to start the third period.
The Stingrays jumped on the scoreboard 1:48 into the final frame as Ford blasted a shot past Americans goaltender Riley Gill (W, 22 saves on 24 shots) from the left point. Defenseman Michal Cajkovsky and forward Andrew Rowe added assists. Forward Spence Asuchak pulled the momentum back for the Americans at 4:43. Dolan continued to pressure for the Stingrays and was rewarded with his fifth goal of the postseason at 9:40 with help from defensemen Lee Moffie and Drew MacKenzie. Americans defenseman Konrad Abeltshauser wrapped up the game scoring with an unofficial empty-net goal at 19:46, finding the vacant goal with Witt heading to the bench for the extra skater.
