South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays announced their roster for the open of training camp. The players will first hit the ice on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 10 a.m. at the Carolina Ice Palace. The Stingrays training camp roster will consist of 22 participants including three players sent down from the Rays' AHL affiliate, the Hershey Bears today, defenseman Patrick McNeill and right wingers Steve Pinizzotto and Stephen Werner.
McNeill, 20, will be making his professional debut in 2007-08 after playing the last four years with the Saginaw Spirit (OHL), where he accumulated 53 goals and 129 assists for 182 points in 249 career junior contests.
"I'm very excited to get him down, to tell you the truth," Bednar said. "I think the one thing we were missing was a power play defenseman. He's going to see a lot of ice time and a lot of power play time if he comes to work and earns that position."
The Capitals' 4th round selection (118th overall) in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, McNeill led all OHL blueliners with 77 points during the 2005-06 campaign and was a 2nd Team All-Star. The 6-foot, 195-pound defenseman was the 1st overall pick in the 2003 OHL Priority Selection.
Pinizzotto, 23, spent two seasons at RTI before signing with the Capitals in March. He then dressed for five regular season games with the Hershey Bears, going pointless with four penalty minutes.
The 6-foot-1, 195-pound forward led the Tigers with 44 points (13g, 31a) in 2006-07 while appearing in all 34 games. Prior to his collegiate career, the Mississauga, Ont. native skated two years with the OPJHL's Oakville Blades, registering 91 points (33g, 58a) and 329 penalty minutes in 83 contests.
Werner, 23, played 26 games with the Stingrays last season, producing 17 points (10g, 7a) and four short-handed markers, which tied for second on the club. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound winger also suited up for 26 contests with the Hershey Bears, recording three goals and three assists for six points.
Werner was the Capitals' 3rd round choice (88th overall) in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, and signed with the organization following the conclusion of his senior season at UMASS-Amherst. With the Minutemen, the Chevy Chase, MD native totaled 116 points (50g, 66a) in 143 career games.
