Phoenix RoadRunners News Release
PHOENIX, Ariz. - The Phoenix RoadRunners of the ECHL are pleased to announce that forward Daniel Winnik is the first RoadRunners' player in the club's brief ECHL history to play in the National Hockey League. Winnik made his NHL debut last night with the Phoenix Coyotes and scored the eventual game-winning goal at 7:30 of the third period in the Coyotes 3-2 win over the St. Louis Blues at Jobing.com Arena in Glendale.
Winnik, 22, was assigned to the RoadRunners from San Antonio of the American Hockey League on Jan. 15, 2007 and collected a season-high three assists in his Phoenix debut on Jan. 19 at Idaho. He was re-assigned to San Antonio on Jan. 31, but was later re-assigned back to the RoadRunners on March 13 and appeared in the line-up that night against Texas at US Airways Center. Winnik finished with six assists and nine penalty minutes in five games with the RoadRunners.
Winnik was a Second-Team Hockey East All-Star and named to the All-New England Team after producing a career-high 41 points with 15 goals and 26 assists in 39 games in 2005-06 as a junior at the University of New Hampshire. Winnik finished tied for fifth in the Hockey East scoring race and culminated his three-year collegiate career with 37 goals, 58 assists, and 95 points in 119 career games. He signed with the Coyotes on March 31, 2006 after being selected by Phoenix in the ninth round (#265 overall) at the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.
