
Stingers have historic night in Vegas

Las vegasâOn a historic night at Cashman Field, the 51s edged the Stingers 5-4 in eleven innings on Friday. Adam Riggs became the fifth player in Salt Lake franchise history to hit for the cycle. Riggs singled in the first, tripled in the third, homered in the fifth and doubled in the top of the eleventh inning to complete the feat. The last player to hit for the cycle for the Stingers was Robb Quinlan on 7/28/02 at Colorado Springs. Dallas McPherson went 0-for-6, striking out six times in the game. McPherson becomes the first player in the 101-year history of the Pacific Coast League to strike out six times in one game. The previous record was five Ks in a game, last done by Stingers' outfielder Jeff Guiel on 8/5/03 at Omaha (15 innings). Zach Sorensen snapped his 10-game hitting streak by going hitless in six at bats. The Stingers set a season-high with 15 strikeouts in the affair. Salt Lake had many opportunities to score but managed only four runs on 14 hits and matched a season-high by stranding 14 runners on base. Jason Middlebrook started the contest and allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts over five innings.
Greg Jones allowed one earned run on three hits with a pair of strikeouts in two relief innings while Brandon Emanuel struck out four and gave up three hits in two scoreless frames out of the bullpen. Derrick Turnbow (1-4) picks up the loss when he gave up a walk-off RBI single to Rick Bell with two on and one out in the bottom of the 11th inning. The Stingers remain in fourth place in the North Division, 14.5 games behind first-place Tacoma. Las Vegas evens the series at 1-1 with Friday night's victory but the Stingers lead the season series 4-2. The Stingers continue their series with the 51s Saturday night with game three at Cashman Field at 8:10 (MST). Chris Bootcheck will toe the slab for the Stingers and will go against Las Vegas righty Brian Falkenborg.
