Ron Calloway's seventh inning fielders choice broke up a 3-3 game and helped the Edmonton Trappers top Tucson 5-3 Friday night at TELUS Field. Tucson lost for the 11th time in its last 14 games.
Ryan Church put the Trappers on the board first in the second inning when he connected for a solo home run off Daigle. The homer hit the top of the left field fence and propelled over the wall. The long ball was Church's 14th of the season.
Church produced Edmonton's second run of the game in the fourth inning on a groundout. The unearned run increased the Trappers lead to 2-0.
Tucson got its first hit and first run in the fifth inning. Kyle Nichols led off the frame with a double after Rigo Beltran had retired the first 12 Sidewinder batters. Nichols would later score on a sacrifice fly from Brian Barden to trim the deficit to 2-1. Tucson tied the game in the sixth on a Julio Ramirez triple and Andy Green sacrifice fly.
Valentino Pascucci untied the game in the bottom of the sixth with a long solo home run off Daigle.
Tucson rallied again in the seventh to even the game at 3. Brian Barden's bloop single scored Brent Mayne from third base. Rob Stanifer retired the Josh Kroeger and Ramirez to strand two runners.
Anthony Medrano started the Trappers seventh with a single. Brandon Watson bunted for a single. Maicer Izturis bunt went for a single when Brian Barden slipped after fielding the roller. Casey Daigle retired Henry Mateo on a pop up and nearly induced the double play from Calloway who beat a throw from shortstop Jerry Gil to give the Trappers the lead for good.
The Sidewinders mustered just five hits in the loss. Nichols accounted for two with a single and double. Barden drove in two of the three Tucson runs.
Tucson dropped to 44-43. The Sidewinders will play a doubleheader against the Trappers Saturday night beginning at 5:05 p.m. (Tucson time). Matt Henrie, recently promoted from El Paso will start game one of the twin bill with Jon Cannon (4-6 5.35) will start the nightcap. The Trappers will counter with Jose Karp (3-8 5.38) and Mike Johnson (6-3 5.43). The games will be broadcast live on Cool 1450 AM.
