Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE -- Omaha right-hander Kris Wilson tossed his best outing of the 2004 season, combining with D.J. Carrasco on a four-hitter, to lead the Royals to a 7-2 victory over the Nashville Sounds in front of a near-capacity crowd of 10,064 fans on Saturday evening at Greer Stadium.
Wilson (5-11) gave up only three hits and two runs while fanning a season-high eight batters in eight innings pitched, his longest outing of the season.
Omaha jumped on the board in the top of the third when highly-touted third baseman Mark Teahen nailed Sounds starter Kevin Jarvis' 1-0 pitch over the center field wall to lead off the frame and give the Royals an early 1-0 advantage. The longball was Teahen's second at the Triple-A level.
In the bottom of the same inning, Nashville evened the score when third sacker Luis Figueroa singled to center to plate Tomas de la Rosa, who had doubled earlier in the frame.
Jarvis turned in a solid first outing for Nashville, allowing only one run on three hits and striking out four in five innings of work.
Omaha took command in the sixth following Jarvis' departure when the Royals scored three runs against Sounds reliever Luther Hackman. Adrian Brown started off the inning's scoring when he hit a line-drive, two-run home run to right to score Aaron Guiel, who had led off with a single. The tater was Brown's second of the year.
The top of the eighth is when the hinges fell off for the Sounds and reliever Blake Stein as the veteran gave up three runs in the inning to allow Omaha to extend its lead to 7-1. With the bases loaded and one out, Teahen singled to score Byron Gettis, who Stein had walked to lead off the inning. Pinch-hitter Wilton Guerrero then hit a grounder to Sounds second baseman Mike Moriarty who forced Teahen at second but shortstop de la Rosa was unable to get Guerrero at first, allowing Calvin Pickering to score on the play.
The ninth-spot hitter for the Royals, Paul Phillips, followed with a blooper to short right field that barely snuck in but was enough to score another run as Raul Casanova came home to give the Royals a commanding 7-1 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth with no outs, Keith McDonald was able to garner one run back, as he drilled a home run off the guitar-shaped scoreboard in left-center to make it a 7-2 game. The homer was his third of the season.
Hackman (1-3) was charged with the loss for the Sounds as he gave up three runs in one inning pitched.
Nashville and Omaha play the final game of the four-game set between the clubs at 6 p.m. on Sunday evening at Greer Stadium. Right-hander John VanBenschoten (3-7, 4.06) will take the mound for the Sounds and go up against Royals left-hander Chris George (1-4, 3.14).
