Portland Beavers News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. â Yamid Haad had four hits and scored three runs as the Portland Beavers handed the Sacramento River Cats their first four-game losing streak in nearly two years with a 6-3 victory Friday night at Raley Field.
Haad is 6-for-9 in the series and logged his second four-hit game of the season for the Beavers, who have won five of their last six to get to within a game of .500 at 44-45.
It is the first four-game skid since Aug. 3-5, 2002 for the River Cats (54-35), the defending Pacific Coast League champions.
All nine starters had at least one hit for the Beavers, who tallied 16 in the game, but left a season-high 14 men on base.
Eddie Opopesa (2-0) got the win and Marty McLeary worked the ninth for his first save.
Chris Mabeus (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season.
The Beavers, who led earlier in the game, trailed 3-2 going into the eighth, but reclaimed the advantage on run-scoring singles from pinch-hitter Bernie Castro and Freddy Guzman in the inning. Sacramento reliever Britt Reames then gave up a walk to Kerry Robinson to load the bases before issuing another free pass to Bobby Scales to make it 5-3 in favor of Portland.
Haad doubled in the ninth and scored on Castro's second RBI single in as many at-bats after coming off the bench in the eighth.
The Beavers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but Sacramento tied the game in the third when Graham Koonce doubled to lead off the frame and scored when Freddie Bynum's hit got through shortstop J.J. Furmaniak up the middle.
Adam Morrisey and Rouse each had RBI singles in the fourth as the River Cats took a 3-1 lead, their first of the series.
The Beavers answered by manufacturing a run in the top of the fifth. Robinson singled and stole his fourth base with the Beavers, setting up Tagg Bozied's RBI single to get the Beavers to within 3-2.
Haad singled and stole second in the top of the second inning, later scoring on Jake Gautreau's single to center field with two outs to give the Beavers an early 1-0 lead.
Portland starter Chris Oxspring had another nice outing, taking a no-decision after allowing three runs on six hits and striking out seven in 6.0 innings.
The Beavers and River Cats meet up in the third game of the four-game set on Saturday night at Raley Field. First pitch is 7:05 p.m.
NOTES: The Beavers are without pitching coach Tom Brown for the remainder of the series. Brown left the team to help coach the United States team in the All-Star Futures Game in Houston on Sunday ... pitcher Tim Stauffer, who earned his first Triple-A victory on Thursday, will depart from Sacramento early Saturday morning on his way to Houston for the game ... with the Beavers down a run, Guzman led off the seventh with a walk, but was picked off first by pitcher Chris Mabeus ... Matt Watson had a 15-game hitting streak come to an end ... Rouse, Sacramento's shortstop, made two acrobatic catches in shallow left field, flagging down a pop up by Robinson and another on a fly out by Bozied in the seventh ... Oropesa, who worked the seventh for the Beavers, is holding left-handed hitters to a .045 batting average (1-for-22).
