Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Tucson scored five runs in the sixth inning Saturday night and cruised to a 6-0 win over Edmonton to split a doubleheader at TELUS Field. Edmonton rallied for a pair of runs in the sixth of the opener to claim a 2-1 victory. The Sidewinders victory in the nightcap kept Tucson from falling below .500 for the first time this season.
Josh Kroeger put the Sidewinders on the board in game two, with his first Triple-A home run, a solo shot in the third inning.
Jon Cannon (5-6) made the lead hold up throwing five scoreless innings for Tucson. The Sidewinders put the game out of reach with the five-run sixth inning. The first six Tucson batters hit safely. Steve Neal's single chased Keoni DeRenne home for a 2-0 advantage. Craig Ansman followed with a double half way up on the 34 foot batters eye, 420 feet away in center field, scoring Andy Green for a 3-0 lead. Doug Devore and Corey Myers also added run scoring hits in the inning.
Mike Fetters threw two scoreless innings for Tucson to finish the game.
Steve Neal broke up a scoreless game in the opener with a sixth inning home run, his tenth of the year, to provide Tucson with a 1-0 lead.
However the Trappers scored a pair of runs off Sidewinder Matt Henrie in the bottom of the frame. Henrie didn't allow a hit until two men were out in the fourth inning and had faced the minimum through 5.1 innings in his first game with the Sidewinders. Henry Mateo produced a pinch hit triple with one out in the sixth. Mateo would score on a pinch hit double from Matt Cepicky to tie the game at 1. Maicer Izturis provided the winning hit with a two-out single scoring Cepicky for the 2-1 lead and eventual win.
Tucson is 45-44 on the season. The Sidewinders will finish off the four-game series Sunday afternoon in a 12:35 p.m. (Tucson time) start at TELUS Field. Lance Cormier (2-2 2.65) will start for Tucson against the Trappers Wilton Chavez (3-8 4.20). The game will be broadcast live on Cool 1450 AM.
