Rochester Honkers News Release

( Rochester, MN) -- With their first winning streak of the season in danger, the Honkers traveled to Willmar today, to take on the Stingers, who also had a two game winning streak coming into the day. The Stingers would snap the first Honker winning streak of the season, with a final score of 2-1. It was the third game this season the Honkers have lost by one run.

Honkers starting pitcher Aaron Siefken (Jr, Bethany Lutheran) fell behind the Stingers early, letting up two runs in the second inning. Siefken was lights out from then on, shutting down the Stingers for the next five innings before the Honkers would call to the bullpen. Siefken's final line was 7.0 innings, two unearned runs on four hits, and five strikeouts. The two unearned runs helped drop his season ERA to 0.64.

The Honkers got some offensive power in the top of the seventh when new arrival Scott Thornburg (Jr, Creighton) homered to left, his second homerun in as many days. Thornburg homered in the tenth inning of game one on June, 10.

Robert Hansen (Fr, Vanderbilt) would pick up one inning of work, coming in to relieve Siefken. Hansen struck out two batters, allowing just one hit and walking one batter.

The Honkers would trail by one heading into the top of the ninth inning. They would make it interesting, with a hit batter, walk, and a balk, but the Stinger closer would do just that, and close the door on the Honkers.

Both teams would only muster five hits on the game, with the Stingers getting two runs, both unearned after the lone error in the field for the Honkers. The Honkers one run would be earned, coming off the aforementioned homerun from Thornburg.

The two teams will be back at it tomorrow, for the middle of the three game series. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 pm, Sunday. Alex Alemann (So, St. Louis University) will make his third start of the season, Alemann is 0-2 on the season, with a 2.08 ERA.

The Honkers will return home on Tuesday, June 14, when they play game one of a six game homestand. The first pitch on Tuesday is scheduled for 7:05 pm, against the Thunder Bay Border Cats.
