Lunkers move into first place with 6-4 win over Mankato

The Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers have been gettin good pitching and timely hitting, and a few breaks here and there to start the season. They got all of that Saturday night at Franklin Rogers Park in Mankato against the Mankato Moodogs, picking up the 6-4 win to move a half game ahead of the Moondogs for 1st place in the North Division.

The Lunkers would strike first in the Top of the 2nd with Tyler Wampler's two RBI single to give Brainerd a 2-0 lead. The Lunkers would add one in the fifth on a Ryan Abrahamson single.

Joe Willman got the start for the Lunkers, going five innings and striking out six. He gave up one run on a triple by Mankato's Shaun Cooper that scored James Roberts in the fifth inning.

Mankato would tie the game in the 6th with a Rudy Weiser 2 RBI double.

The Lunkers would strike for three in the 7th to take the lead for good. A Casey Roche single would drive in Steven Brault. The fifth Lunker run came via a Jon Crist bases loaded walk. Then, with Kyle Crocker at the plate, a passed ball allowed Roche to score.

With Roche on the mound in the 9th, the Moondogs would score a run and get two runners in scoring position with 1 out. But Roche retired the next two batters to end the game.

Tyler Sparger gets the win for Brainerd Lakes Area, pitching three innings of relief. Jeff Rohrbach takes the loss for Mankato. Casey Roche recorded his second save.

The Lunkers and Moondogs are back in action Sunday night at 6:05 in the second of a three game series.
