Alexandria Beetles News Release
Willmar, MN - Three Willmar Stinger (29-21, 9-6) pitchers combined to hold the Alexandria Beetles (21-29, 8-7) to a single run while striking out 13 and the Stingers closed out a series victory with a 5-1 win at home on Thursday.
Stinger starter Scott Lieser, who allowed four hits and a run in the first two innings, settled down to pitch into the sixth and struck out eight to earn the victory.
Alexandria's Steve Weber was the hard-luck loser as he was charged for four runs, only two earned, in five innings.
For the second consecutive game in Willmar, a third-inning error opened the door for the Stingers as they scored three runs, two unearned, to take control of the game.
Entering the inning, the game was tied at one after Matt Lowenstein put the Beetles ahead with a two-out single in the second and the Stingers pulled level on a Max Kuhn sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame.
In the third, the first two men reached for Willmar on an error and a walk. After a fielder's choice, Michael Suchy doubled for RBIs 50 and 51 as the Stingers pulled ahead. A fly-out later, Kenny Roberts singled into left to plate Suchy and put Willmar up 4-1.
Alexandria, stymied into the sixth, delivered three singles in the inning, but a double-play grounder kept the Beetles off the board and the Stingers put up an insurance run in the seventh to put the game out of the reach. Suchy and Corben Green delivered back to back singles which, with the help of a fielding error, pulled ahead 5-1.
The Beetles again put two on in the eighth only for reliever Josh Biggs to escape trouble on a groundout, and Willmar closer Brady Anderson set down the Beetles in order in the ninth to lock in the victory.
With the loss, Alexandria drops into a third-place tie with Mankato in the North Division, 2.5 games behind first-place Duluth.
The Beetles return home to begin a three-game set with the Waterloo Bucks leading into the All-Star break. First pitch on Friday night is scheduled for 7:05 CDT.
