Sarnia Sting News Release
WINDSOR, ON - The Sarnia Sting picked up their second consecutive pre-season win, topping the Spitfires by a score of 4-2 on Friday night at the WFCU Centre in Windsor.
Sarnia native, Justin Fazio, made 30 saves between the pipes tonight, picking up the win for the Sting. Michael DiPietro skated away with the loss for Windsor.
Sting defenceman, Jake O'Donnell opened the scoring at 7:50 of period one when his wrister from the point made its way through traffic and found the back of the net. Overage centreman, Daniel Nikandrov drew the lone assist on the O'Donnell tally.
The Sting picked up another single in the second frame; this time off the stick of returning forward, Alex Renaud. Zach Core registered the assist on Renaud's short-handed marker at 3:56 of period two.
The Spitfires struck first in the third period as Anthony Stefano cashed in on a pretty feed from Luke Boka. Just 9 seconds later, Maple Leafs draft pick, Nikita Korostelev restored the two-goal lead for Sarnia as he walked in off the face-off and riffled a wrister past DiPietro. The goal was unassisted.
Virtey cut the Sting lead to 1 with just 2:00 remaining in the final frame, but moments later Korostelev potted his second of the game into the empty net; icing the game for the Sting.
Sarnia was without regulars Pavel Zacha, Josh Jacobs, Jakob Chychrun, Brandon Lindberg, Troy Lajeunesse and Kevin Spinozzi on Thursday night.
The Sting return to action on Saturday night at the Sarnia Sports & Entertainment Centre for game two of the home-and-home series against the Spitfires. Puck drop is slated for 7:05 PM. Tickets are still available for Saturday. Fans can call the Box Office at (519) 541-1717 or online here.
The Sting close out the pre-season on Sunday afternoon against the Flint Firebirds in a neutral-site pre-season game. The puck drops at 5:05 PM at McMorran Place in Port Huron. For tickets to Sunday's game, call the McMorran Place Box Office at (810) 985-6166.
