(Windsor, ON) - Nashville Predators General Manager David Poile announced today defenceman Trevor Murphy has signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the club.

The 20-year-old Windsor native spent parts of three seasons with the Spitfires after he was acquired from the Peterborough Petes on November 23, 2012. He posted 39 goals and 77 assists along with 221 penalty minutes in 152 games between 2012-13 and 2014-15.

""It's something I've wanted for so long," Murphy said. "It's been a journey since I was a little kid. For it to come true is unbelievable. It's surreal. The real work is still to come. But I'm grateful and thankful for the opportunity."

Murphy credits Spitfires General Manager Warren Rychel for helping him get to this point.

"The biggest thing that ever happened to me was Warren trading for me," Murphy said. "The team was struggling at the time in Peterborough and I was struggling as an individual. Warren brought me home. Being around friends and family and getting a fresh start helped me grow as a player and a person. I could never than him enough, along with Boogie (President Bob Boughner), Jonesy (former Associate Coach Bob Jones) for giving me the chance to play and grow and (Spitfires Athletic Therapist) Joey Garland for working with and believing in me."

Rychel says while it's a huge loss for the club, it's gratifying to see Murphy realize a dream.

"It's a tough day," Rychel said. "We lose our best player and arguably the best defenceman in the league. It hurts our team right now. On the other hand it's an opportunity for others to step up.

"Once you get past that, Trevor has come a long way. He matured on and off the ice while he was here. You're always happy for a kid that signs an NHL contract. He had a great year last season and put himself in a good position. We're happy for he and his family and wish him all the best."
