Calgary Vipers News Release

The Calgary Vipers managed only seven hits in a 6-2 loss to the Edmonton Cracker-Cats at Telus Field in Edmonton, Alberta. The Snakes scored the first run of the game right away in their first at-bats but only scored one run from there in the final eight innings. The defeat hands the Cracker-Cats the series and drops Calgary's record to 1-2 on the second half of the season.

The Vipers started the scoring right away in the top of the first inning with a Jorge Mejia single, steal of second base, and a Carlos Duncan run batted in double for the 1-0 lead.

Orlando Miller tied the game in the bottom of the third inning with a solo homerun and Edmonton then took the 2-1 lead with a John Pasieka walk, Marcus Nettles double, and a Ruddy Yan sacrifice fly.

A run was added by the Cracker-Cats an inning later with singles from Joe Jiannetti, Jose Morban, and a RBI base hit off the bat of Miller for the 3-1 advantage.

Edmonton added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with a Jiannetti walk, Morban single, and Chris Van Rossum two run triple. Miller followed by scoring Van Rossum with a base hit for the 6-1 score.

For the first time since the first inning the Snakes scored in the top of the seventh when Colin Moro was hit by a pitch, Darryl Brinkley singled, and Mejia knocked in Moro with a base hit.

Ryan Schurman (1-4) received his fourth straight defeat while P.J. Bevis had a great outing from the bullpen, tossing the final two innings and not giving up a hit while walking one.

On Tuesday July 15th Snakes' Manager Mike Busch will lead the 20-man Golden Baseball League All-Star squad as they take on the United League's All-Stars in a battle of two of the top independent leagues in San Angelo, Texas. Joining Busch from the Vipers will be ace and pitching coach Evan Greusel and left fielder Drew Miller. Veterans Darryl Brinkley and Felix Jose have received permission from the GBL to miss Tuesday's All-star game to rest minor injuries and allow younger players a chance to play in the game.

The Snakes return home to Foothills Stadium Friday July 18th at 7:05 PM (MDT) for "Paint the Park Pink" weekend. Friday's game will open a six day home stand which will feature seven games against the Chico Outlaws and the Yuma Scorpions.

Tickets can be ordered by calling 277-BALL (2255). All games can be heard live online at www.calgaryvipers.com.
