Chico Outlaws News Release

CHICO, CA - Following a day off and two smoked-out games due to area fires, the Chico Outlaws returned to action for the first time since Tuesday and won their second in a row, downing the Yuma Scorpions in front of a Saturday night crowd of 1,737 at Nettleton Stadium.

The visiting Scorpions took advantage on an Eric Pringle throwing error to plate a pair of runs in the top of the 1st inning, but Chico responded with a big rally in the 2nd off former Outlaws pitcher Tyler Pearson - Shane Cronin doubled home Jose Valdez to cut the Yuma lead in half...Lino Garcia scored from third on a wild pitch...and Steve Boggs, Jesse Kovacs and Casey Garrison all delivered two-out RBI single to give Chico a 5-2 lead. In the 3rd Garcia walked, stole second and came home on another Cronin double, putting the Outlaws up 6-2...Yuma pulled to within three when Jose Rodriguez scored on a Trevor Caughey wild pitch...but Chico got the run back in the 5th when Scorpions pitcher Roger Luque uncorked a wild pitch to allow Julian Benavidez to come home and make the score 7-3.

Yuma managed to make it a close contest courtesy of a solo homer by Jose Rodriguez in the 6th and an RBI single by Darrick Hale in the 8th, cutting the Outlaws lead to 7-5...but in the bottom of the 8th Chico broke the game open - four hits (including an RBI single by Boggs and a two-run double by Garrison), three errors and two bases-loaded walks added up to seven runs to put the Outlaws up 14-5. Ben Shockey came in from the Chico bullpen and got the final three outs in the 9th to lock down the victory - the Outlaws first against the Scorpions in five tries this season.

Caughey (5-2) allowed just two earned runs through seven innings to pick up the win; Pearson (1-2 with Yuma, 1-3 overall) lasted just two-and-a-third innings to take the loss. Cronin finished with a 3-for-5 night to lead Chico's 11-hit attack; Boggs, Garrison and Garcia had two hits apiece...Rodriguez and Henry Calderon combined for four of the Scorpions nine hits. Saturday's win improved the Outlaws record to 15-26 on the season, while Yuma dropped to 24-19 for the year. The two teams meet again Sunday in the finale of the abbreviated weekend series...right-hander Nick Casanova (0-0) gets the start for Chico; the Scorpions will throw righty Jorge Perez (3-2). First pitch is 6:05pm...hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM and AM 1340; the game can also be heard on-line at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
