Iowa Cubs News Release

Des Moines, IA - The Chicago Cubs have activated 3B Ian Stewart from the disabled list and optioned him to the Iowa Cubs today. OF Brett Jackson has been placed on the disabled list, effective May 1, with turf toe. The I-Cubs will welcome RH Kyuji Fujikawa to Principal Park on a major league rehab assignment on Sunday and RH Matt Garza on Monday during this home stand.

Stewart went on the disabled list on March 22 with a left quad strain. He joined Iowa on a major league rehab assignment on April 14 and has batted .091 (4-for-44) with a double, four RBI, eight walks, and 16 strikeouts in 13 games with Iowa. The 20-day limit for a position player on rehab expired yesterday. The Cubs activated him from the disabled list and optioned him to Iowa. The Cubs acquired Stewart from the Colorado Rockies in a four-player trade, December 8, 2011 and he hit .201 (36-for-179) with five homers and 17 RBI in 55 games for Chicago last year while being limited by a wrist injury that required off-season surgery. Stewart re-signed with the Cubs on a one-year deal this off-season.

Jackson is batting .219 (14-for-64) with two doubles, two triples, two home runs, and nine RBI in 19 games with Iowa this season. The turf toe injury has limited him to pinch-hitting and designated hitter duty since April 15. The Cubs drafted Jackson in the first round (31st overall) in 2009 out of the University of California - Berkley. He has hit .269 (159-for-592) with 25 homers and 73 RBI in 154 games with Iowa over the last two seasons and made his big league debut with Chicago last year in August. He hit .175 (21-for-120) with four homers and nine RBI in 44 major league games.

Fujikawa has been on Chicago's disabled list since April 13 with a strained right forearm. In five games, he was 1-0 with a 12.46 ERA and two saves in three opportunities. In 4.1 innings, he allowed six runs on eight hits, walked one, and struck out four. The Cubs signed Fujikawa to a two-year deal in December following 12 seasons with the Hanshin Tigers of the Japanese Central League. He led the league in saves in 2007 and 2011. Fujikawa is expected to pitch one inning in relief sometime during tomorrow afternoon's double-header against Oklahoma City.

Garza has been on Chicago's D.L. since March 22 with a strained left lat. He hasn't pitched in a major league game since July 21 last season at Atlanta due to a stress reaction in his right elbow that cost him the final two months of last season. Garza was 5-7 with a 3.91 ERA in 18 starts with the Cubs last season before the injury. Garza has already made one rehab appearance with double-A Tennessee at Mississippi on Wednesday, May 1. He allowed one run on one hit, walked two, and struck out none in 2.2 innings. He was the losing pitcher as the Smokies lost 2-0 in a rain-shortened five-inning game. Garza was originally drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the first round (25th overall) of the 2005 draft out of Fresno State University. He was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays in a six-player deal in 2007 and acquired by the Cubs from the Rays in an eight-player trade in 2011. He threw the Rays' first no-hitter on July 26, 2010 against the Detroit Tigers and was named the ALCS MVP in 2008, by going 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA in two starts against the Red Sox to help the Rays reach the World Series.

The Cubs and RedHawks are scheduled to play a single game tonight at 7:05 at Principal Park. The gates will open at 5:35. The first 1,000 fans will receive a magnet schedule sponsored by Pittsburgh Paints and students that show their high school or college ID at the ticket window can buy one reserved grandstand ticket, get a second free sponsored by Hits 99.9. LH Brooks Raley (3-2, 3.81) will pitch for the Cubs against LH Brett Oberholtzer (1-2, 7.79) for the RedHawks. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed live at iowacubs.com with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45.
