TACOMA, Wash. - The Tacoma Rainiers held on for a 7-6 series-opening win over the Reno Aces at Cheney Stadium on Friday night to extend the team's season-high winning streak to 10 games
Starter James Paxton (2-2) earned the win after turning in his strongest outing of the season. The left-hander held the Aces to one run on two hits over 5.0 innings and struck out a season-high nine batters.
Nate Tenbrink put the Rainiers on top 1-0 early with a first inning leadoff home run - the outfielder's second homer this season. Tenbrink capped off a four-run inning for the Rainiers in the second with a two-RBI single and ended the night 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Carlos Triunfel's three-hit night led a lineup that collected a combined 11 hits on Friday. The infielder recorded a double and pair of singles. Scott Savastano and Jesus Sucre each went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Outfielder Eric Thames went 0-for-4 and failed to reach base, ending his league-leading on-base streak at 28 games.
Tacoma held a lead as large as 7-1 before surrendering five runs on five hits in the top of the seventh inning.
The team's 10-game winning streak is the longest since another 10-game streak, July 29-August 10, 2008. This is also the first time Tacoma has been at least nine games over .500 since the team was 61-52 on August 5, 2010.
The Rainiers (19-10) play the second game of the team's four-game series against Reno (9-20) at 5 p.m. tomorrow, May 4. Right-hander Blake Beavan (0-0, -.--) is scheduled to make his 2013 Tacoma debut against right-hander Charles Brewer (1-2, 5.06) for the Aces.
