
Stephens Late Winner Defeats Mooseheads

Ted Stephens scored his second goal of the night with 1:53 remaining in the 3rd period to give the Moncton Wildcats a 4-3 victory Saturday night in front of 3975 fans at the Moncton Coliseum. Daniel Milan and Thomas Flynn also scored for the Wildcats who got 27 saves from goaltender Steve Gleeson in the win. Kord Abeltshauser, Charles Bety and Carl Gelinas scored for the Mooseheads. Fredric Piche stopped 22 of 26 shots in the loss.
Neither team was able to score in the first period has both goalies stood strong stopping 8 shots apiece. The Wildcats had a wonderful opportunity to score the game's first as they had a 5 on 3 powerplay but were unable to capitalize.
The Mooseheads got the game's first goal 1:02 into the second period as Abeltshauser scored his 5th of the season. The Wildcats tied the game at 8:03; Simon Jodoin pinched in from the point and found Flynn in the slot who was able to beat Piche blocker side for his 3rd of the year. Late in the period the Wildcats were rewarded another 5 on 3 and this time they were able to capitalize, Milan point shot found its way through at 17:49. Then with the Moosheads still shorthand the Wildcats scored again as Stephens scored his second of the game at 18:15 to give the Cats a 3-1 lead.
The Wildcats sat back in the third period trying to protect their two goal lead and Halifax took advantage. Bety got the Mooseheads within one 42 seconds into the frame to make it 3-2. Then at 15:47 Gelinas scored on the powerplay to tie the game at three. With 1:53 remaining Stephens got his second goal of the game when he jammed home a loose puck to give the Cats the lead.
On the powerplay the Moosehead were 1 for 7 while the Wildcats went 2 for 5. Halifax held a 30-26 shot advantage for the game.
The Wildcats now have a week off as they prepare to host the Saint John Sea Dogs for the last time next Friday. Game time is 7:30pm at the Moncton Coliseum.
