Stellar pitching net Dillas fifth straight win

AMARILLO, TX - Amarillo Dillas starter Ralph Roberts allowed only five hits through eight innings, while the Amarillo offense did enough to defeat the Laredo Broncos 3-1 on Thursday night at the Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa in front of 2,146 fans.

Roberts (6-3) struck out a season high 10 batters and allowed only one run on the night. Broncos Gregorio Martinez (4-5) went six innings and allowed two runs off seven hits in the effort. Andy Noonan pitched the final out of the inning for his third save of the season.

Amarillo took the lead in the second as Terrance McClain tripled to lead off and scored on a Trent Lockwood RBI double for a 1-0 lead. The Broncos responded with a run in the fourth as David Cardona walked, followed by a Mario Mendez walk, followed by an RBI single by Argelis Nunez for a 1-1 tie game.

As Roberts allowed only three hits past the fifth as the Dillas took the lead in the sixth. Stantrel Smith doubled, stole third and scored on a two-out single by Willie James. Amarillo added an insurance run as Smith singled to lead off, stole second, went to third on a Coby Mavroulis sacrifice and scored on a Justin Wenger suicide squeeze, Wenger's 100th career RBI for a 3-1 lead.

Robbie Wooley got the first two outs of the ninth, allowed two runners on, but Noonan struck out pinch hitter Robert Moron to preserve the 3-1 victory.

With the win, the Dillas improve to 34-27, while the Broncos fall to 21-41. Friday, Amarillo will host Laredo for the third game of a four-game series at 7:05pm with Dillas Pre-Game set to begin at 6:50 on AudioSportsOnline.net. Game time is tentative and is subject to blackout.
