Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Harlingen - The Edinburg Roadrunners extended their winning streak to 11-straight with a 9-7 win over the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings tonight at Harlingen Field.
The WhiteWings (28-34) got to Tim Haines (7-4) right away. Agustin Septimo and Joaquin Rodriguez drew leadoff walks. After a groundout advanced the runners, Brian Nichols hit a sacrifice fly. Juan Melo hit an RBI-single, Welinson Baez singled, Juan Cabrera hit an RBI-single and Jose Torres hit an RBI-single to make it 4-0.
Haines settled down after that, allowing just two singles over the next four innings while striking out three.
Wendy Rosa (2-3), who took over after Jesus Sanchez was ejected in the first inning for hitting Wilmer Pino to start off the game, walked three and gave up one hit in the first three innings, but held the Roadrunners (35-27) scoreless. With two outs in the fourth, however, Bryon Smith and Eric Gonzalez walked. Osiel Flores, Pino and Sergio Guerrero followed with RBI-singles to make it 4-3.
With one out in the fifth, Hunter Owen and Vincent Blue walked to knock out Rosa. David Cross came in and allowed an RBI-single to Smith, a two-run double to Gonzalez, an RBI-single to Flores, an RBI- double to Pino and an RBI-single to Guerrero before recording an out to make the score 8-4.
The WhiteWings started their comeback attempt in the bottom of the sixth against reliever Austin Bridges. Baez led off with an infield- single, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a two-out single by Justin Holloway, who entered the game in the first inning after Sandy DeLeon was ejected for actions related to a benches clearing incident following Pino getting hit by a pitch, to make it 8-5.
In the seventh, Rodriguez led off with a bunt-single and Rico Santana followed with an RBI-double. After a groundout, Melo hit an RBI-single to knock out Bridges and make it 8-7.
The Roadrunners added an insurance run in the ninth. Smith led off with an infield single and pinch-runner Nick Aranda stole second. Gonzalez singled and Flores was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Pino popped up to short, but Rodriguez dropped the ball, allowing Aranda to score to make it 9-7.
Kelley Casares pitched a scoreless ninth for his 11th save.
