Tulsa Oilers News Release
TULSA, OK - The Tulsa Oilers announced Tuesday that center Gary Steffes has been called up by the Lake Erie Monsters of the American Hockey League. Lake Erie is the AHL affiliate of the NHL's Colorado Avalanche.
In 34 games for the Oilers this season, Steffes posted 33 points and a team-high 19 goals. The 25-year old anchored Tulsa's top line and led all Oilers with ten multiple-point games. Steffes, 6-2, 210 pounds, was named the CHL First Star of the Month for October and on November 23 against Bloomington he recorded the only Oilers hat-trick of the season
"I'm thrilled for Gary to have this opportunity to show what he can do at the next level," said Oilers Head Coach Bruce Ramsay. "Gary is always prepared, he always works extremely hard, and he's an unbelievable teammate to the rest of the guys in our locker room. I know he can succeed in the AHL and I can't think of anyone more deserving."
Steffes, a Miami (OH) University product, hasn't missed a single game since starting his professional career in Tulsa in 2010. The Michigan native, who participated in training camp with the AHL's Oklahoma City Barons, was named to the CHL All-Rookie Team for the 2010-11 season. In his second year as a pro, Steffes poured in 52 points (22 goals, 30 assists) and ranked third on the Oilers roster in overall scoring.
Steffes is the first Oilers player to be called up this season.
The Monsters (18-15-3) sit in eighth place in the AHL's Western Conference standings and play three road games this week. Lake Erie visits the San Antonio Rampage on Thursday and Friday before traveling to face the Houston Aeros on Saturday.
The Oilers visit Missouri on Friday and return home to the BOK Center on Saturday to face off with the Bloomington Blaze at 7:35 p.m. on Youth Jersey Night. Sunday afternoon, the Oilers host the Fort Worth Brahmas at 4:05 p.m. and all fans are encouraged to join the players for a post-game skate.
