Quad City Mallards News Release
MOLINE, Ill. (January 8, 2013) - Chad Nehring scored in regulation and then provided the only goal of the shootout while Adam Russo made 31 saves in regulation and overtime before turning aside all five penalty shots he faced as the Arizona Sundogs survived the host Quad City Mallards' comeback bid to claim a 3-2 shootout victory Tuesday night. The Mallards, who erased a 2-0 deficit in regulation, did earn one point for the shootout loss.
Nehring scored what proved to be the deciding goal by sweeping the puck between the pads of Mallard goaltender John Murray (29 saves) in round three of the shootout.
The Mallards had to dig out of an early hole to even force overtime and, as it proved, the shootout. The comeback started when Mickey Lang cut the Sundog advantage to 2-1 with a backhander from the right wing circle at 4:41 of the second period. The Mallards were on the power play when Patrik Levesque scored the tying goal from the slot with just under seven minutes left in the third period.
The Mallards found themselves in need of a rally after the Sundogs scored twice in 92 first period seconds. Nehring buried Jason Morgan's centering pass to give Arizona a 1-0 lead at 6:43 of the first. The gap doubled when Mike Glaicar's drive from the left point was deflected home by Kevin Petovello at 8:15.
The Mallards also announced Tuesday that forward Brett Robinson has departed the team and been placed on the Mallards' suspended list.
The Mallards return to action Thursday night on the road against the Bloomington Blaze. The Mallards next play at home next Friday evening, January 18 against the Fort Worth Brahmas. On January 18, the Mallards will wear Turn "Back to Back" the Clock jerseys that mark the fifteenth anniversary of the second of the two consecutive championships won by the Mallards in 1997 and 1998. Those jerseys will be auctioned off immediately after the Mallards wear them against the Brahmas. The auction - the first of two Genesis jersey auctions this season- will benefit the Genesis Flu Free QC program. January 18 is also the first of the Mallards' College Nights- fans will be able to purchase $1 beer and $1 hot dogs through the end of the second intermission that evening.
Tickets for the January 18 tilt- as well as seats for all remaining Mallards regular season home games- can be purchased in person at the i wireless Center ticket office, at Ticketmaster outlets,
