Idaho Steelheads News Release
Boise, ID- For the third straight game, the Idaho Steelheads (1-1-3) battled to an overtime period and came away with just a single point as the Utah Grizzlies (3-1-1) prevailed by a 4-3 score in a shootout Wednesday night at Qwest Arena.
Utah jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Kevin Deeth scored at 2:11 of the opening period when he picked up a rebound at the bottom of the right wing circle and bounced a puck off of Idaho goalie Tyler Beskorowany into the net.
Mike Gabinet netted the goal that tied the game at 1-1 at 16:42 of the first period when he fired a shot through traffic from the left point with Idaho on the power play; the puck bounced off the leg of a Utah defender, and redirected into the net, beating Utah goalie Andrew Engelage.
Mark Derlago gave Idaho a 2-1 lead just 10 seconds into the second period when he collected a pass from Steelheads defenseman Dustin Friesen and notched his fifth goal of the season from point-blank range; John Swanson also assisted on the goal.
Just 1:13 later, Utah tied the game when Tyler Ruegsegger scored on a rebound from the side of the goal to beat Beskorowany and make the score 2-2.
Marcus Carroll scored on a one-timer from the slot to give Utah a 3-2 lead at 11:18 of the third period, but Derlago would answer minutes later.
At 17:26, Derlago netted his sixth of the season in just five games when he beat Engelage on his blocker side with a wrist shot. Marty Flichel and Tyler Ludwig assisted on the goal.
After overtime did not yield a winner, a shootout would be the deciding factor. With shootout conversions from Brad Snetsinger and Michael Gergen, Utah earned the victory.
Tyler Beskorowany stopped 33 of 36 shots, and falls to 1-1-2 with the overtime loss. Andrew Engelage, who was making his first start of the season, improves to 1-0-0 after stopping 41 of 44 Idaho shots.
The Steelheads host Utah again on Friday night; the puck drops at 7:00 PM at Qwest Arena.
