
Salmon Kings Defeat Reign in Home Opener

Victoria, BC - In a Wednesday night matchup, the Victoria Salmon Kings took the ice for the first time this year at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre for their home opener against the Ontario Reign. The Salmon Kings started David Shantz in net, while the Reign gave Kellen Briggs the call.
Victoria opened the scoring at the 17:35 mark while on the man advantage as Ryan Turek scored his first of the campaign on a point-shot that went through the pads of Briggs. The Salmon Kings extended their lead on the power play with only seconds remaining in the period. PJ Atherton fed a pass to Ryan MacMurchy at the right face-off dot where he buried the puck top shelf over the sprawling Reign netminder. The goal was MacMurchy's first of the season and gave the Salmon Kings a 2-0 lead after twenty minutes.
Ontario pulled within a goal when on the power play at the 14:25 mark. Kyle Kraemer capitalized on his own rebound in front of the net as the rubber slid through the legs of the Salmon Kings' goaltender. The goal was Kraemer's second of the season. Victoria re-established their two-goal lead with 1:04 left in the period when Chad Painchaud notched his first of the campaign on a shot that found its way through a maze in front of the net. Victoria took a 3-1 advantage into the second intermission.
The Reign closed the gap to one-goal at the 1:24 mark when Shawn Collymore broke in through the middle of the zone and snapped a shot off the post and in past Shantz' blocker. The marker was Collymore's second of the campaign. The Salmon Kings responded at the 6:15 mark when a streaking Painchaud picked up his own rebound on a shout coming off the post, and put it past Briggs for his second goal of the night. Victoria finished the scoring at 12:16 when Gajic netted his fourth of the year going top-shelf on the Reign. Salmon Kings 5 Reign 2.
Victoria went 2/3 66.7% on the power play, while Ontario was 1/8 12.5%. The Salmon Kings outshot the Reign 39-29.
