Steelheads Outlast Aces, 4-3
February 15, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release
BOISE, Idaho â Idaho outscored Anchorage 3-2 on the power play and Dan Shermerhorn's goal early in the third period, the only even strength marker of the game, provided the margin of victory in a 4-3 Steelhead decision Saturday in front of 5,255 at the Bank of America Centre.
In an exciting first period that featured a combined 28 shots on goal (15 by Anchorage), Idaho scored the game's first goal on the power play, as Dan Shermerhorn found a cutting Jeremy Mylymok at 10:34. Less than three minutes later, Adam Copeland tipped in a Scott Swanson drive from the point in the midst of another Steelhead power play to increase the lead to 2-0. The Aces gained their first man advantage situation late in the period and capitalized, as Yvan Corbin delivered a cross-ice pass right onto the tape of Dean Larson, who buried his first goal in 11 games and his 22nd of the year at 16:35 to reduce the deficit in half heading into the middle frame.
Jeff Shevalier scored his third goal of the series midway through the second period on another power play to give Idaho a 3-1 edge, but B.J. Young answered at 11:11 with a one-timer that beat goaltender Blair Allison just 1:12 after Shevalier's goal. Despite being outshot 14-4 in the second period, Anchorage trailed just 3-2 heading into the final 20 minutes, with all five goals having been scored on the power play.
Shermerhorn provided the Steelheads with a much-needed insurance goal at 2:38 of the third period. Trailing 4-3, and with goaltender Ryan Person having been replaced in favor of the extra attacker, Ruslan Batyrshin banged home a Ryan Moren rebound with 36 seconds left in regulation to cut Idaho's lead to 4-3, but the Steelheads did not permit another shot the rest of the way in holding on for their 12th win in 13 games with the Aces this season. Idaho (38-10-4 overall) is unbeaten in its last 11 games, while Anchorage has lost 6 in a row overall and has dropped 12 of its last 13 away from Sullivan Arena.
Anchorage (12-38-2) and Idaho wrap up their three-game series in Boise tomorrow night at 5:00 p.m. AST before heading to Alaska for a weekend set February 21-22 at 7:00 p.m. All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
