Brampton Steelheads News Release

Mississauga, ON - The Mississauga Steelheads closed out the 2013-14 on Thursday night at their annual year end awards banquet at the Grand Victorian Convention Centre in Mississauga. Guests joined staff and players as the Steelheads celebrated and highlighted the achievements of a successful second season.

The Scholastic Player of the Year Award went to rookie forward Jesse Barwell. Barwell attends Phillip Pocock Secondary School where he is an excellent student who displays a great attitude. Despite his hockey heavy schedule and transitioning into a new school this past season, Barwell maintained excellent grades over the course of the school year. His success in the classroom was also acknowledged earlier this season as he was nominated for the Bobby Smith Trophy (OHL Scholastic Player of the Year), making him part of the 2013-14 OHL Scholastic Team.

Mike Vissers from Hershey Canada was on hand to present the second award of the night, the Hershey Canada Rookie of the Year Award, which went to defenseman Sean Day. Day was the Steelheads 1st overall selection at the 2013 OHL Priority Selection after being granted "Exceptional Status" by Hockey Canada, allowing him to enter the league a year early. Day played 60 games in his rookie season with the Steelheads contributing 16 points (6 goals, 10 assists) in the regular season. The future looks bright for this young defenseman as his hard word on the ice and his effortless skating have caught the eyes of many fans this season.

Steelheads' Captain Brett Foy was awarded the Most Sportsmanlike Player Award for his hard work and self discipline for the second consecutive season. Foy was named Captain this season after Stuart Percy moved on to his professional career with the Toronto Marlies. A natural leader, Foy is committed to playing a team game. Steelheads' Head Coach and General Manager described Foy as a "low maintenance player who is half an hour early for everything." 2013-14 marked Foy's final season in the OHL. He had 26 points in 68 games during the regular season, and added 53 penalty minutes.

Forward Bryson Cianfrone was awarded the Hazel McCallion Community Service Award for his commitment to involvement in our local community. Cianfrone joined the Steelheads early in the season and did not hesitate getting involved in various community initiatives. Over the course of the 2013-14 season, Cianfrone visited patients in the oncology and pediatric units at Credit Valley Hospital, took part in various team events, and represented the Steelheads as an ambassador at many school assemblies. Cianfrone was the Steelheads' leading scorer last season with 44 regular season points (17 goals, 27 assists) and was named a finalist for the Red Tilson Trophy, awarded to the league's Most Outstanding Player of the Year.

The final award of the night for Most Valuable Player went to Steelheads veteran goaltender, Spencer Martin. Martin was awarded MVP for his consistency as a leader and player both on and off the ice. With this being his 3rd season in Mississauga, Martin was a solid role model for a young Steelheads team and contributed to the team's success on the ice with 1, 863 saves and a 0.899 save percentage. Martin was drafted in the 3rd (63rd overall) at the 2013 NHL Entry Draft by the Colorado Avalanche.

The night was capped off by honouring Steelheads overage player, Brett Foy as he was presented with his home jersey by General Manager and Head Coach, James Boyd and Assistant General Manager and Associate Coach, Jason Nobili. Foy has been a great player for the franchise over the years and the Steelheads wish him the best of luck in his future hockey career.
