Oshawa Generals News Release

Oshawa ON- Oshawa Generals General Manager, Roger Hunt announced that former Windsor Spitfire Eric Wellwood has been named the assistant coach for the Oshawa Generals.

General Manager Roger Hunt had this to say regarding the hiring of Wellwood "Eric is a former player in the OHL that brought consistent leadership and a consistent work ethic on and off the ice. His knowledge of the OHL and Pro Hockey, current hockey systems and his passion and commitment, make him a perfect complement to DJ. He's a bright young coach and we are excited to have him as a part of our hockey club. Eric has a real good handle on the video systems we use and understands the importance of video to today's players".

"I have known Eric and his family for a long period of time and I couldn't be more thrilled for this young man to join our coaching staff and join DJ behind the bench" said Oshawa Generals Governor and President, Rocco Tullio.

Wellwood, brother of former NHLer Kyle Wellwood, spent four seasons as a player in the Ontario Hockey League, all with the Windsor Spitfires from 2006 to 2010 capturing 2 Memorial Cups in the process. After his time in the OHL, Wellwood went on to play for the Philadelphia Flyers of the NHL and the Adirondack Phantoms of the AHL. In April 2013, Wellwood suffered a serious leg injury when his skate came up to the lower leg, severing his tendon and causing vascular damage. This caused Eric to retire from the game of hockey at just 23 years of age.

"I couldn't be more excited to join such a storied franchise in the Oshawa Generals. I have a lot to offer to these players as I played 4 years in Windsor for the Spitfires. This is a different chapter for me and I am really looking forward to developing these kids into pros on and off the ice and ultimately bringing a championship back to the city of Oshawa" said Wellwood.
